General Summary of Position

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Specialty Pharmacy Technician assists in all areas of pharmacy operations, including data entry, product dispensing, and prescription order packing in a high-volume fulfillment and/or call center environment. This position is part of a multidisciplinary team that supports patients with complex medication needs requiring high-touch care, coordination, and follow-up.

 

The Specialty Pharmacy Technician works collaboratively with clinic liaisons, pharmacists, providers, and specialty pharmacy patients to ensure safe, accurate, and timely delivery of specialty medications in alignment with MedStar Specialty Pharmacy's mission to provide world-class, compassionate care—every patient, every time, at every touch point.

 

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answers the phones, troubleshoots issues, handles requests, answers questions, or triages to appropriate person.
  • Assists with placing the daily order for drugs and supplies; receives checks and puts away the daily order; follows established inventory management procedures; participates in physical inventories and cycle counts.
  • Demonstrates behavior consistent with MedStar Health's mission vision goals and objectives.
  • Monitors workflow queues and completes all steps in a timely manner troubleshooting and resolving issues to ensure all Rx's are completed on time.
  • Prepares prescriptions for dispensing: counts verifies and labels medication accurately and according to policy and legal requirements.
  • Processes all payment transactions in person over the phone and through the mail order module. Communicates and resolves any payment related denials or discrepancies.
  • Prepares prescriptions for packaging for daily shipment. Creates invoices and shipping labels; ensures compliance with HIPAA requirements; and follows all cold chain shipping standards.
  • Processes refills and performs data entry of new prescriptions including demographics insurance plans and prescription information under the supervision of a pharmacist; brings to the attention of a pharmacist any claims requiring overrides or interventions; troubleshoots insurance claim rejects; and follows up on problem prescriptions.
  • Communicates regularly with the teams in the clinics and the support center about the status of benefits pre-authorizations and financial assistance; as well as copay or other issues to facilitate timely processing of prescription orders and deliveries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required or equivalent required

Experience

  • 1-2 years Pharmacy technician experience in a retail long term care mail order or specialty pharmacy setting required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Successful completion of the pharmacy technician certification through the nationally accredited certification examination of PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) or the ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians) within 6 months of hire date; within 180 Days required and
  • Pharmacy technician licensure required by the state where the pharmacy is located required

This position has a hiring range of

USD $19.17 - USD $33.08 /Hr.
