General Summary of Position
Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician III prepares and fills routine orders for prescribed medications; restocks automated dispensing machines; repackages medications; and compounds both sterile and non-sterile medications. The Pharmacy Technician III performs designated advanced level technical functions to facilitate pharmacy operations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of the licensed Pharmacist, prepares oral topical and all parenteral medications for dispensing to patients including the selection, labeling and packaging of appropriate pharmaceuticals using appropriate IV equipment and filling of medication carts.
- Consistently provides cross coverage for specialty pharmacy technician roles participating in multi-functional pharmacy technician duties capacity at least 60% of the scheduled shift.
- Performs higher level duties as needed by the department including but not limited to: controlled substance monitoring, process improvement and procedure development, procurement, discrepancy resolution and report generation inventory management.
- Assists pharmacists in obtaining patient specific information as appropriate for safe medication management. Under direct supervision, participates in the exchange of information with appropriate healthcare professionals and staff.
- Preparation: Safely and accurately prepares all medications in the most ready to administer form (including hazardous medications and sterile products) using proper techniques, calculations and appropriate precautions. Labels and packages medications according to hospital policy applicable laws and regulations and standards of practice to ensure safe accurate administration (i.e. labels medications with the drug name, strength, quantity, beyond use date, patient name, patient location and directions for use). Maintains documentation for all repackaged medications as required by departmental policy.

Minimal Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program required
- AA/BS or some college credits in Natural or Physical sciences and/or Business Management preferred
- One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
Experience
- 3-4 years Hospital Pharmacy Technician Experience required
- 1-2 years IV Admixture and Pharmacy Automation Experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- PHRMTECH-R - Registered Pharmacy Technician Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Board of Pharmacy required upon hire
- National pharmacy technician license such as the PTCB - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health career Association (NHA) certification required upon hire
This position has a hiring range of
USD $22.48 - USD $39.75 /Hr.
