General Summary of Position
The Patient Care Technician Specialty Services provides direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or licensed provider in assigned specialty areas including Burn Services and Perioperative Services. Each position within this job description acts as a singular position for each patient care technician. All patient care technicians regardless of specialty area play a vital role in assisting the clinical teams ensuring patient safety and maintaining a clean and organized environment.The Patient Care Technician functions as a member of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or medical staff/providers. Assists nursing and medical staff with procedures specific to procedures and/or tests and patients with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living). Performs specific care activities such as specimen collection phlebotomy intravenous (IV) catheter insertion electrocardiography (EKG) and documentation in the health record.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Performs procedures as directed by the nurse or physician including blood glucose monitoring utilizing a glucometer phlebotomy as applicable IV/PRN adapter insertion as applicable simple dressing changes assisting physician and registered nurse in examinations/procedures and collecting laboratory specimens such as urine stool and sputum and sending them to the laboratory.
  • Maintains patient comfort confidentiality and dignity. Performs patient observation duty including 1:1 observation and application of restraints.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) including early mobilization ambulation bathing oral care dressing skin care positioning feeding toileting and range of motion activities.
  • Contributes to department goals and objectives and adheres to policies procedures quality and safety standards and SPIRIT Values. Complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Assists in measuring and documenting patient intake and output including maintaining Foley catheters drains and ostomies. Monitors vital signs and records them in the patient chart. Monitors and responds to patient call lights.
  • Reports observations or changes in patient status to appropriate nursing and/or medical personnel according to department protocol.
  • Prepares patients to be seen by Physician/providers. Assists Physician in examinations/procedures. Cleans and prepares procedure rooms as needed.
  • Maintains cleanliness and safety of patient rooms and care environments including linen changes meal tray removal bed rail checks and safety restraint checks.
  • Transports and escorts patients during discharges transfers and medical appointments. Completes errands such as delivering specimens equipment and supplies.
  • Receives stocks and maintains equipment supplies and orderly supply and utility rooms.
  • Ensures complete handoff to oncoming shift and obtains handoff from outgoing RN/PCT staff. Initiates and assists in CPR.
  • Attends staff meetings ongoing educational offerings and participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • For Perioperative Services: Assists with patient-specific care in the ORs under the direction of Physician Nurse or Surgical Assistant Technologist/Technician including transport and safe transfer on/off the OR table pre-operative patient preparation and positioning application of SCD sleeves point-of-care testing and assisting staff with equipment and blood/blood product transport.
  • For Perioperative Services: Prepares and maintains the operating room before during and after surgical procedures including room setup and turnover retrieving medications and case carts ensuring supplies are available and assisting staff with positioning devices equipment and blood/blood product transport.
  • For Perioperative Services: Supports sterile procedures and equipment management by opening sterile items ensuring proper functioning and availability of equipment and supplies cleaning and/or disposing of equipment and picking up instruments from SPD or performing Rapid Turnovers as needed.
  • For Perioperative Services: Responds promptly to emergent situations and assists with patient transfer to recovery rooms or other designated areas.
  • For Burn Services: Successfully completes burn dressing and post-operative takedown competencies under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Collaborates with primary Registered Nurse(s) and other Burn PCTs to ensure efficient hydrotherapy and dressing processes.
  • For Burn Services: Assists with burn patient transport and safe transfers to/from hydrotherapy and patient rooms. Performs hydrotherapy simple wound debridement post-operative graft dressing takedowns and burn dressing applications under RN supervision.
  • For Burn Services: Prepares stocks and maintains burn dressing supplies and clean linen for current and subsequent shifts. Cleans and turns over hydrotherapy rooms drops off and picks up dressing instruments from SPD and ensures infection control and aseptic techniques are followed.
  • For Burn Services: Assists with opening sterile items and maintaining sterile fields under RN direction. Responds promptly to emergent situations and follows established protocols.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Completion of an approved nursing assistant certification program required or
    • Completion of a national Registered Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic program/course with at least six months or more experience as an EMT CCT or EMTP required or
    • Nursing Student (RN Program) with completion of at least one year of clinical rotation or a graduate of an approved nursing program (LPN or RN) required
    Experience
    • Prior work experience not required
    • General health care experience in an acute care long-term care or other settings preferred
    Licenses and Certifications
    • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant in the District of Columbia required
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
    • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification preferred
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Basic math knowledge
    • Verbal and written communication skills
    • Basic computer skills preferred.

    This position has a hiring range of

    USD $20.64 - USD $31.30 /Hr.
