About the Job

This is a PRN role, working hours for this role will be primarily every other weekend on evening shift, with occasional weekend day shift availability preferred.  

 

General Summary of Position

 

The primary duties involve handling patient samples, including direct receipt, processing, and distribution throughout the laboratory, as well as properly packaging and shipping specimens to other MedStar testing laboratories and external reference labs.

 

Additional responsibilities include addressing specimen-related questions and follow-up needs and serving as the first point of contact for clinical staff and providers regarding specimen requirements. The role also provides backup phlebotomy support for inpatient and outpatient collections. Responsibilities include maintaining supply and reagent inventory, submitting orders to supervisors in a timely manner, following universal precautions and safety protocols, and properly rotating, storing, and disposing of specimens.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides backup phlebotomy support as needed and follows established policies, including proper two-identifier procedures.
  • Cleans laboratory glassware, sinks, workbenches, refrigerators, centrifuges, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Follows standard precautions at all times.
  • Prepares stains, solutions, quality control materials, standards, and reagents as directed or according to established procedures.
  • Utilizes and maintains waived testing equipment and performs waived testing according to established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains inventory and supply stock and ensures a neat and orderly work area.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established departmental goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with applicable government and accreditation regulations.
  • Performs other related and ancillary duties as assigned and consistently demonstrates a team-oriented approach.
  • Submits suggestions to improve laboratory efficiency.
  • Demonstrates initiative and the ability to work independently.
  • Empties red-bag waste routinely and according to established safety procedures.
  • Consistently demonstrates professionalism that promotes customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED, required.

Experience

  • One year inpatient phlebotomy experience, required. 

Licenses and Certifications

  • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification Phlebotomy certification, preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.

  • Attends annual mandatory in-service and departmental in-services as required.
  • Minimally two years experience as a phlebotomist preferably in a hospital setting.
  • Has good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must NOT be colorblind.
  • CPR certification preferred but not required.
  • Wears hospital ID at all times and utilizes the time management clock consistently.

This position has a hiring range of

USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /Hr.
