General Summary of Position
Performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting and medical practice office under the supervision of a physician/provider. Duties may include documentation of medical history vital signs EKGs event monitor hook-up chart preparation and assisting providers with patient exams. Position may float to other ambulatory sites/locations within the system.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Documents clinically related activities accurately in the patient's medical record. Transcribes patient medical history into EMR as assigned. Provides telephone screening services to gather information from patients determines appropriate disposition and documentation per established telephone screening protocols.
  • May assist provider with patient preparation for the examination minor office procedures and education of patients. Supports other members of the clinical team assuring optimal patient flow; manages variable and unpredictable patient volume throughout the workday. Provides phone and clerical support and serves as a backup for the Patient Services Coordinator or other team members as needed.
  • May perform lab draws EKGs and event monitor hook-ups.
  • Participates in population management activities including an awareness of the populations they serve and engages the patient in self-management support goal setting pre-visit planning and the capturing of information that leads to health care improvement activities.
  • Participates in daily team huddles to review and prepare for scheduled patient visits or phone calls. Screens all patients regardless of visit type for potential preventative care needs ongoing support barriers to care safety concerns and urgent/emergent medical conditions and potential fall risk.
  • May conduct surveillance for transitions of care emergent care or follow-up tasks such as retrieval of documents associated with referrals/testing conducts motivational interviews that include screening on disease management ability motivation to change learning care needs community outreach needs. Identifies potential behavioral health needs of patients based on medical history using appropriate screening tools and notifies the provider of findings.
  • May assist with registering and checks checking- in patients including insurance verification and collection of copay.
  • When working at an ambulatory site/location may be asked to fulfill infection prevention and environmental responsibilities as assigned which may include: Light cleaning during clinic hours and cleaning of equipment. Updates appropriate records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manage drug and medical supply inventories. Performs site assessments such as Environment of Care rounds and participates in solutions as directed.
  • Assists with updating the EMR to propose patient medication refills for provider approval. Completes requisitions for tests (if applicable). Contacts insurance companies for Pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals including insurance authorization as requested.
  • On occasion may be tasked to ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory and quality/safety standards by maintaining and auditing temperature logs ensuring all supplies including medications are current/ unexpired checking and maintaining emergency equipment and all related tasks.
  • As part of a High-Reliability Organization reports actual and potential problems concerning patients families and associates using established reporting protocols for MedStar Health and/or work location. Participates in ongoing performance improvement initiatives to increase safety.
  • Ability to float to other ambulatory sites/locations within the system to be able to perform all duties at multiple entities.
  • Attends all scheduled meetings including but not limited to regular staff meetings and training classes for safety infection control OSHA CLIA CPR and others as required. Participates in ongoing professional developments when possible such as webex education on clinical skills safety and front desk initiatives.
  • Demonstrates behavior consistent with MedStar Health mission vision goals objectives and patient care philosophy.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent required
    Experience
    • Less than 1 year 6 months of customer service experience or prior experience in a healthcare organization required and
    • Experience working with electronic records preferred
    Licenses and Certifications
    • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant for Urgent Care and Multispecialty locations ONLY Upon Hire required or
    • EMT - Emergency Medical Tech For Urgent Care and Multispecialty locations ONLY Upon Hire required
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Clinical competency as verified during the initial 90-day orientation period and annually thereafter.
    • Excellent customer service/patient interaction skills.
    • Basic computer skills preferred.

    This position has a hiring range of

    USD $18.00 - USD $28.73 /Hr.
