Responsibilities

Group Underwriter Associate

Participates in up to a year-long on the job training program that develops knowledge and skills needed to progress in the health plan group underwriting profession.  Prepares renewal and prospect cases to be evaluated by Group Underwriters in determining rates.  Assists experienced underwriters.  Learns to evaluate data and risk characteristics of groups.  Assists in the establishment of prospect and renewal rates that are compliant and in support of corporate financial and membership goals for all product lines.

·         Participates in an on-the-job training program to learn and be able to apply knowledge and skills needed to perform the Group Underwriter job.  Assists the underwriter in preparation of fully insured and self-funded cases using the various tools used by the department to evaluate prospective and renewal cases.

·         Under supervision, rates fully insured cases that are more routine in nature.

·         Calculates actuarial values for renewal, renewal alternate, and prospect cases using the department's tool that analyzes benefits, for input into the rating system.

·         Gathers necessary data and information to rate both renewal and prospect cases. Generates reporting from the company's Group Reporting system. Summarizes and formats data received from prospects for input. Orders and reviews high claimant notes for renewal groups.

·         Produces Underwriting reports including renewal worksheets, ERISAs, IBNRs and other ad hoc reports. Assists in preparation of presentations.

·         Assists management with special projects, as needed.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Group Underwriter I

Evaluates data and risk characteristics of groups to assist in the establishment of prospect and renewal rates that are compliant and in support of corporate financial and membership goals for all product lines.

·         Calculates renewal rates and premiums for enrolled groups using standard formulas and actuarial information, recognizing system requirements and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and adherence to internal policies and procedures.  Identifies unusual, non-standard circumstances needing special accommodation.

·         Develops calculation and processing of benefit and funding change alternatives for existing individuals and groups.

·         Discusses the proposed plan and funding designs with manager.   Gathers information, develops options and consults with sales/service to help determine how to best meet the client's objectives.

·         Reviews and evaluates underwriting information and data for prospective groups to calculate proposed rates for less complex cases.

·         Analyzes and processes exceptions and negotiations in accordance with underwriting procedures. Processes new enrollment and final underwriting of individuals and group business. Makes recommendations on process for managing exceptions.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Group Underwriter II

Evaluates data and risk characteristics of groups and makes decisions of intermediate complexity to establish prospect and renewal rates that are compliant and in support of corporate goals for all product lines.

·         Calculates renewal rates and premiums for enrolled individuals or groups, ensuring compliance with state/federal regulations and internals policies.  Recognizes unusual and non-standard circumstances which need special accommodation.

·         Calculates and processes benefit and funding alternatives for existing individuals and groups.  Consults with sales/service to strategize and to determine how to best meet the client's objectives.

·         Evaluates underwriting information and data for prospective individuals and groups to calculate proposed rates.

·         Evaluates exceptions and negotiations and makes recommendations for course of action. Processes new enrollment and performs final underwriting of individuals and group business.

·         Performs testing of tools and systems. Assists internal and external clients as needed.

·         Assists in training and coaching junior underwriting staff as needed.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Group Underwriter III

Evaluates data and risk characteristics of individuals or groups and make complex decisions to establish prospect and renewal rates that are compliant and in support of corporate goals for all product lines. Exercises sound judgment to make exceptions to standard underwriting results and communicates with leaders. 

·         Develops renewal rates and premiums within state/federal regulations and internal policies.  Evaluates risk and uses sound judgment to propose pricing. Identifies cost drivers and addresses exceptions and negotiations according to policy.  Performs final underwriting.

·         Interprets and analyzes underwriting information and data for prospective individuals and groups to develop proposed rates and programs after consulting with sales to determine the best approaches to meet the client's objectives.   Calculates and processes benefit and funding alternatives for existing individuals and groups.

·         Develops meaningful benefit and funding alternatives for existing individuals and groups after collaboration with sales to determine the best approach to meet the client's objectives.  Articulates results to peers, leadership, and sales/service.

·         Acts as a consultant and works with sales, brokers, clients, leadership and other areas of the company to provide reporting, analytics, insight, and creative recommendations on cost solutions that support market and company strategies.

·         Promotes efficiency and develops activities to enhance proficiency. Trains more junior level analysts and identify ways to increase productivity.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Senior Group Underwriter

Functions independently while evaluating data and risk characteristics of individuals or groups to make complex decisions regarding renewal premiums, prospective client quotes or bids and the implementation of health underwriting policies to achieve acceptable financial results in support of corporate goals for all product lines. Exercises sound judgment in making exceptions to standard underwriting results to promote the retention and acquisition of business. Manages projects and provides training and education to underwriting, sales, brokers, and clients.

·         Develops renewal rates and premiums within state/ federal regulations, and internal policies and procedures. Evaluates risk and determines logical pricing.    Recognizes cost drivers and proposes solutions.  Articulates results and recommendations to analysts, leadership and sales/service, brokers & consultants, and clients.  Addresses exceptions and negotiations according to policies.  Performs final underwriting.

·         Proposes meaningful benefit and funding alternatives for existing clients in collaboration with sales to provide the best plan designs to meet the client's and the Company's objectives.

·         Analyzes underwriting information, data and risk for prospective individuals and programs in collaboration with sales, brokers & consultants and clients to provide the best plans and approaches that meet the client's and the Company's objectives.

·         Acts as a consultant and works with sales, brokers & consultants, clients, other areas of the company, and senior executives to provide reporting, analytics, insight, and creative solutions that support market and company strategies.

·         Trains and develops more junior level analysts and sales personnel to share knowledge, enhance productivity and efficiency of the area(s). Leads development of activities that enhance proficiency of the area(s). Leads staff in the absence of management.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

Qualifications

Group Underwriter Associate

·         Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Math, or related field.

·         Experience in the financial services or health care industry preferred.

·         Intermediate Microsoft Office skills.

·         Ability to learn health insurance industry.

·         Strong math aptitude.

Group Underwriter I

·         Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or related field.

·         6 to 12 months experience as a Group Underwriter Associate or equivalent underwriting experience in health insurance.

·         Knowledge of the health insurance or financial services industry preferred.

·         Intermediate Microsoft Office skills. Proficiency with underwriting systems.

·         Strong math aptitude.

Group Underwriter II

·         Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance or related field required.

·         2 years experience as a Group Underwriter or equivalent combination of experience and training.

·         Strong math aptitude.

·         Demonstrated knowledge of underwriting concepts and techniques and general health insurance and benefit and funding designs/methodology.

·         Intermediate MS Office Skills, including MS Access.

Group Underwriter III

·         Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance or related field.  Master's Degree preferred.

·         3 years' experience as a Group Underwriter or equivalent experience in health insurance underwriting.

·         In-depth knowledge of underwriting concepts and techniques of general health insurance and benefit funding designs/methodology.

·         Strong math aptitude.

·         Intermediate Microsoft Office skills, including Access.

Senior Group Underwriter

·         Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance or related field

·         5 years' experience as a Group Underwriter or equivalent experience in health insurance underwriting

·         In-depth knowledge of underwriting concepts and techniques of general health insurance and benefit funding designs/methodology.

·         Ability to underwrite for groups that are complex such as consortiums, multi-levels, and providers.

·         Strong math aptitude

·         Intermediate Microsoft Office skills, including Access.

·         Ability to orient, train and assist more junior level staff.
