Job Summary

The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for the operational functions of all staff within their assigned perioperative department and coordinates the daily activities pertaining to nursing care in all areas. All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the mission, vision, strategic imperatives and standards of Lexington Medical Center (LMC), American Nurses Association Standards and in accordance with the provisions set forth by the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Minimum Years of Experience: 3 Years of Perioperative Nursing Experience
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Current RN license to practice in the state of South Carolina;
National nursing certification in specialty of area assigned or must obtain within 1 year of hire date into the position.
Required Training: None.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Business Acumen:
    • Demonstrates proficiency in using technological applications.
    • Assesses equipment and technology needs of the department.
    • Demonstrates good time management and ability to prioritize.
    • Demonstrates proficiency in human resource management to ensure safe and effective operations.
    • Documents staffing and scheduling changes.
    • Assesses daily staffing needs and makes daily staffing assignments as needed.
    • Accurately completes and maintains records and reports.
  • Leadership by:
    • Identifies and recognizes individual strengths and contributions verbally with ongoing feedback and formally through LMC Gold and Award of Excellence.
    • Establish and maintain ongoing coaching and mentoring role with assigned staff to include annual evaluations, performance improvement and clinical education needs assessments.
    • Involvement in recruiting, interviewing, hiring and orientation processes.
    • Involvement in investigation and resolution of patient, visitor and staff concerns.
    • Represents Nurse Manager in their absence.
    • Involvement in Unit Base governance.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to address LMC guidelines and policies.
    • Following the appropriate chain of command in dealing with issues
  • Caring Practice by:
    • Embracing diversity by recognizing differences in cultures and patient needs and striving to meet the needs of patients, visitors and staff.
    • Coordinating the care of patients within the assigned department and across department boundaries.
    • Oversees compliance and adherence to patient Bill of Rights.
    • Functions as a positive agent of change by communicating and implementing  practice changes and upholding standards in a positive manner.
  • Professional Practice by:
    • Reviewing trends and recommending opportunities for improvement.
    • Demonstrating personal effectiveness and manages emotions.
    • Acquiring appropriate leadership and clinical education credits as dictated by designated specialty certifying agency.
    • Assessing staff performance at critical interval, reviews disciplinary action with employees and completes annual Performance Appraisals.
    • Promoting staff and patient satisfaction.
    • Utilizing the service recovery process to resolve complaints (GIFT).
    • Mentoring of assigned staff on an ongoing basis, with structured periodic feedback.
  • Hospital-wide responsibilities by:
    • Completing yearly safety training and other mandatory classes.
    • Completing employee health workup and mandatory check-offs.c. Maintains all certifications current.
    • Ensures staff compliance with all LMC requirements and certifications.
    • Ensure Hazardous Waste or Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals are discarded, stored, and managed with other compatible waste streams in containers that are properly labeled and closed prior to being shipped offsite for proper disposal.  Initial RCRA training is received within 6 months of the hire date and continuing with annual RCRA training.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
