Job Summary

DRS NPS has an immediate need for a Mechanical Engineer for a broad technical role that will require component and system-level engineering, analysis, supplier and customer interaction, prototyping and test during the development of marine power equipment, including motors, generators, and gas turbine enclosures.  Duties may include Mechanical Analysis, Aerodynamics/Fluids, Thermal, Fluid Systems, Mechanical Packaging, etc.  This individual will evaluate and recommend design approaches to meet production requirements for new or improved products and investigates solutions to product or process problems.  The candidate is expected to be able to work independently, while leveraging expert knowledge from others inside the company, to make complex decisions. 

The ideal candidate is an individual who can be flexible with their schedule, possesses strong mechanical engineering skills, and is committed to the success of a program.  Direct experience with large (1MW+) marine power generation or propulsion equipment, motor assembly and manufacturing processes, and previous US military program experience are considered to be distinct advantages.

Job Responsibilities
  • Contribute directly to project success through individual technical contributions
  • Responsible for leading a group of engineers performing technical activities
  • Delivering on all project performance, quality, schedule, and budget objectives
  • Confidently and competently represent DRS in front of customers, including the US Navy
  • Provide budget, cost, and schedule inputs for individual tasks and larger scopes of work
  • Clearly communicating and presenting technical and programmatic information to technical and non-technical individuals
  • Collaboration with other departments, DRS locations, and suppliers to solve problems and develop the best overall solutions
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree from a 4 year accredited college or university in Mechanical, Electrical or Manufacturing Engineering
  • 5+ years experience in an engineering role
  • Demonstrated experience leading an engineering team through successful completion of technical activities on time and budget
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem solving capabilities
  • Knowledge / Experience with engineering tools (ANSYS, Unigraphics/NX, Solidworks/Creo, Matlab, Simulink, Flux, SPEED)
  • US citizen
  • Experience with execution of programs for the US military
  • Familiarity with industrial and military design specifications
  • Experience in the manufacture of electric machines, electric motor/drive systems, electro-mechanical systems, or other rotating equipment
  • Specific experience with large (1MW+) permanent magnet electric machines
