SCHEDULE: Full-time

Enter the world of healthcare by training to be a Patient Safety Attendant (PSA). Join this unique opportunity featuring 4 weeks of paid training to work directly at the patient's bedside with a team of caring professionals. Successful participants will be offered a full time position in one of our 14 hospital facilities with full benefits, including advancing your healthcare education. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone looking to break into healthcare and gain assistance to becoming a licensed professional or working in another capacity in a hospital environment. 

 

What is a Patient Safety Attendant (PSA)? 

Job Summary:  The Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) participates in high-quality, patient-centered care by providing continuous observation and monitoring for high risk patients.  In collaboration with the patient care team, the PSA ensures the patient environment is free of obstacles and minimizes risk of falls and accidental or intentional self-harm.  The Sitter may also assist with some basic activities of daily living.

How it works:

You will interview virtually or on-site with a panel of healthcare leaders and professionals. If selected, you will be hired to the hospital facility as a full time employee. You will undergo a background, drug screen, health screening, and facility onboarding. You will learn how to become a Patient Safety Attendant in a classroom and clinical setting. 

A few things to know before you apply:

A high school diploma or GED is required

Participants must be able to pass a background check and drug screen

No experience is necessary - it is actually preferred!

A strict Monday through Friday schedule is required for the first 4 weeks and you must be able to comply to be accepted.

Some travel may be required

Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute is a 380-bed acute-care hospital offering a full range of services. Lawnwood is home to the most experienced Heart Institute on the Treasure Coast providing interventional and therapeutic care, including open-heart surgery. Other hospital services include adult and pediatric emergency services, labor/delivery and birthing, pediatrics, orthopedics, oncology, nuclear medicine, diagnostic services, as well as inpatient and outpatient surgical services.

Lawnwood is designated by the Joint Commission as a Certified Primary Stroke Center. The Physical Rehabilitation Center is CARF accredited and we are designated a Level II Trauma Center by the Florida Department of Health and verified by the American College of Surgeons. We also offer a freestanding ER in Vero Beach providing emergency treatment for adults and children closer to home. Additionally Lawnwood offers the area's only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). At Lawnwood patients come first – no matter what!   1. Maintains a direct line of sight with patient at all times, including while family and/or visitors are in the room. Accompanies patient and ensures patient safety during transportation, testing, and procedures occurring away from the patient's normal environment.
  1. Establishes a safe, risk-free patient environment by utilizing knowledge of fall prevention protocols, infection control measures, and self-harm prevention. Performs room assessment regularly and after any visitations.
  1. Monitors patient physical and emotional condition.  Reports any changes in status promptly while remaining direct line of sight with the patient.
  1. Intervenes as needed to prevent patient from harming self or others.  Seeks immediate assistance for escalating incidents.
  1. Establishes a safe, risk-free patient environment by utilizing knowledge of fall prevention protocols, infection control measures, and self-harm prevention. Performs room assessment regularly and after any visitations.
  1. Monitors patient physical and emotional condition.  Reports any changes in status promptly while remaining direct line of sight with the patient.
  1. Intervenes as needed to prevent patient from harming self or others.  Seeks immediate assistance for escalating incidents.
  1. Creates clear, accurate documentation on patient status and activity during the shift. 
  1. Demonstrates knowledge and respect of patient rights to privacy and protection of patient confidentiality.
  1. Promotes consistent, positive patient interactions that advance the agenda of unparalleled patient service.
  1. Demonstrates caring and empathy in all interactions and advocates for patient- and family-centered approach in all decisions and actions.
  1. Demonstrates excellent communication skills, including active listening.  Ensures patients, physicians, and colleagues have a clear understanding of all communications. 
  1. Engages in evidence-based best practices that enhance the patient experience, including communication fundamentals/AIDET, Teach-Back, Narrating Care, etc.
  1. Participates as an active member of the health care team and positively promotes the rest of the team to patients/families/caregivers and other colleagues.
  1. Maintains a professional appearance and demonstrates behaviors consistent with established policies/procedures.
  1. Serves as a resource to department staff, students, volunteers and other departments, and contributes to the teamwork essential to ensuring quality patient care.
  1. Assists in the orientation of new staff as needed.
  1. Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities, and seeks opportunities to improve department and inter-department processes.
  1. Restocks non-medicinal patient room supplies as needed.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is required

Excellent work ethic, professional appearance, and a kind, compassionate demeanor is needed

Participants must be able to pass a background check and drug screen

No experience is necessary - it is actually preferred!

A strict Monday through Friday schedule is required for the first 2 weeks.
