Scientific Lead for Plant Trait Discovery – St. Louis, Mo

We are in search of a skilled and driven scientist to spearhead a team of researchers, focusing on achieving objectives tied to trait discovery projects. The ideal candidate will possess a robust expertise in plant molecular biology and genetics, plant transformation, gene editing, and some prior experience in leading a discovery team.

The role involves direct collaboration with the St. Louis-based research team, along with the responsibility of establishing and sustaining valuable partnerships with internal teams and external entities. The overarching goal is to drive the development of innovative traits in sugarcane.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning and execution of proof-of-concept (POC) projects, ensuring efficient coordination of personnel, services, and external providers.
  • Define goals and deliverables for the Trait Discovery team in alignment with corporate and area objectives.
  • Manage the research team effectively to meet annual goals and adhere to project plans and deadlines.
  • Leverage expertise in various technical domains such as plant development, genetics, breeding, pathology, bioinformatics, and gene editing to guide the research team in delivering trait candidates and supporting data.
  • Assist the site lead in formulating and executing both strategic and technical plans for trait discovery and POC projects.
  • Collaborate as necessary with teams, areas, and functions across the company to obtain information, infrastructure, expertise, and support for early trait projects, integrating them seamlessly into downstream pipelines.
  • Ensure alignment and compliance with stewardship and quality management functions to maintain the integrity of products and workflows produced by the team.
  • Communicate effectively with scientific and non-scientific stakeholders through meetings, presentations, and reports.
Requirements:
  • PhD in Plant Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Molecular Biology, Plant Biochemistry, Plant Genetics, plant pathology or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in relevant plant trait engineering
  • Experience leading a scientific team, preferably in industry
  • Demonstrated proficiency in both verbal and written communication, coupled with strong interpersonal skills, showcasing a proven history of fostering robust relationships and collaboration across diverse teams, functions, and disciplines.
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously, agility to shift efforts with changing priorities, and ability and willingness to embrace flexibility while working productively in a fast-paced environment.
