Research Assistant / Junior Scientist (Contract)
Location: Boston, MA (On-site)
Duration: Approximately 3 months (with potential for extension or future conversion)
Schedule: Flexible; part-time or full-time considered
Pay Rate: 35-45/hr
Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Research Assistant / Junior Scientist to support ongoing laboratory projects during a temporary maternity leave coverage. This contract role is based on-site in Boston and will focus on maintaining continuity of active research programs in a fast-paced, translational research environment. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, follows established SOPs, and brings strong mammalian cell culture experience to ensure experimental continuity with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform routine mammalian cell culture, including passaging, media changes, counting, and differentiation
• Support stem cell–based workflows, with a preference for experience in iPSCs and cardiomyocytes
• Conduct basic analytical assays, including flow cytometry (simple workflows, staining, instrument operation) and qPCR
• Assist with tissue engineering and 3D tissue fabrication using extracellular matrix systems and molds
• Maintain healthy cultures without reliance on antibiotics, following best aseptic practices
• Execute experiments according to SOPs and maintain accurate, organized documentation
• Support ongoing translational research projects, including preclinical drug screening applications
• Coordinate and communicate effectively with remote team members, including international collaborators
• Participate in training and knowledge transfer prior to maternity leave transition
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in biology, bioengineering, biomedical sciences, or a related field (Master's or PhD considered)
• 0–2 years of relevant laboratory experience (less experience acceptable with advanced degree)
• Strong mammalian cell culture experience (stem cell experience highly preferred)
• Tissue Engineering experience
• Familiarity with flow cytometry and qPCR workflows
• Comfort working independently with minimal day-to-day supervision
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to follow SOPs and ask questions when clarification is needed
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with iPSC culture, cardiomyocytes, or cardiac tissue models
• Exposure to tissue engineering or 3D cell culture systems
• Background in translational research or preclinical assay development
• Willingness to provide minimal weekend coverage for brief media changes, as needed
Additional Details
• This is a contract position with flexibility in hours (approximately 20–40 hours/week)
• While a full-time role is not guaranteed, there may be opportunities for extension or future conversion as the team expands
