Description

Principal Investigator – Physician (Internal Medicine)

  • Opportunity: Part-Time (20-30 hours a week and flexible hours)
  • Type of hire: W-2 hourly as a 1099 Independent Contractor
  • Location: On-site in Houston, TX (Location to be announced soon)
    • Our client will also consider Dallas as a location so that you can gain Investigator experience in Research if you have Sub-I or no PI experience and open to relocating to Houston late summer/early spring.

Kelly Science and Clinical is hiring a PI for one of our growing Clinical Research Site Networks. Our client focuses on advancing medical innovation through high-quality, patient-centered clinical research. This is a part time need for a future new site they are developing in Houston TX. We are looking for those who are flexible with supporting projects in the meantime while expecting to start in the PI role once the site is up and running. This could require supporting Dallas TX studies or consulting with ongoing projects until later this year.

Role Summary

We are seeking an Internal Medicine physician (MD/DO) to serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) at our Houston, TX research site (opening in August 2026). This position is ideal for a physician seeking a slower pace of work and very flexible, part-time hours typically 10–20 hours/week depending on study needs. Comprehensive PI onboarding and ongoing support are provided. You will provide medical oversight for clinical trials, ensure participant safety, and help generate high-quality data—without the heavy demands of a traditional clinic schedule.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the study physician for assigned trials; ensure participant safety and ethical conduct.
  • Review and confirm participant eligibility; oversee screening outcomes, AEs/SAEs, and retention trends.
  • Perform/oversee study-specific medical assessments (histories/physicals, concomitant meds, endpoint review).
  • Provide medical oversight to site staff (Sub-Investigators, CRCs, RNs, lab staff); be available for consultancy and safety questions.
  • Collaborate with IRBs, sponsors, and CROs; join SIVs, monitoring visits, and close-out activities as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with protocols, site SOPs, ICH-GCP, FDA/21 CFR, and Texas state requirements.
  • Review clinical data (labs, ECGs, vitals) and support timely safety reporting and documentation.
  • Contribute to high-quality source documentation, query resolution, and continuous improvement of site processes.

Why This Role Fits a Slower Pace
  • Predictable scheduling anchored to study visit calendars (no overnight call; rare urgent escalations).
  • Focused patient interactions with pre-screened volunteers and comprehensive study protocols.
  • Dedicated research team handles day-to-day coordination; you provide clinical oversight and judgment.
  • Flexible hours—work blocks can often be scheduled around your availability.

Training & Support
  • Structured PI onboarding (GCP/ICH training, protocol-specific training, mentorship from experienced PIs).
  • Ongoing support from seasoned clinical operations, regulatory, and QA teams.
  • Clear SOPs, templates, and documentation workflows to simplify your transition into research.

Qualifications — Required
  • MD or DO (Internal Medicine).
  • Active, unrestricted Texas medical license and DEA license
  • Interest in clinical research and comfort reviewing structured clinical data.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and confidentiality practices (HIPAA/PHI).

Qualifications — Preferred
  • Prior experience as a PI or Sub-Investigator (our client will provide training for the right candidate).
  • Familiarity with ICH-GCP and FDA regulations (21 CFR Parts 50, 54, 56, 312, 812).
  • Board certification in Internal Medicine; DEA registration if required by specific protocols.
