Title: Commissioning Field Technician
Pay rate: Open for discussion
Duration: 6 months to start (Contract /FTE)
W2 contract only (No C2C)
Location- Texas area

Must-Have Skills:

  • Worked on at least 2 BESS projects (10-25 MW or higher)
  • 2 commissioning projects (preferably 4)
  • Comfortable using MS Office and tech-savvy.
  • Self-motivated, strong communicator
  • Can work well with different teams and adapt
  • 80% field travel (travel required as needed for projects; occasional office visits)
  • Highly Prefer candidates from Texas

ROLE SUMMARY

The Commissioning Lead for Substation and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects is responsible for leading field efforts to ensure client projects are properly designed, installed, and tested prior to safe operation. This role is essential in demonstrating and recording technical performance and system behavior throughout project implementation. Regular attendance is a key requirement in accordance with company policies and supervisory expectations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Support:
  • Support departmental goals and oversee field commissioning of U.S. and Canadian projects, acting as the process owner for related policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with and directly support the Commissioning Manager and Commissioning Engineers to ensure smooth and effective project execution.

Project Involvement:
  • Participate in key design reviews (e.g., P&ID, Equipment Layout, HAZOP) to integrate pre-commissioning and commissioning requirements.
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure quality and timely delivery.
  • Assist in developing strategies, cost estimates, schedules, and commissioning plans, including execution, energization, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
  • Perform onsite inspections to verify project installation and design alignment.

Commissioning Management:
  • Develop and ensure compliance with commissioning procedures and plans in line with regulatory and contractual requirements.
  • Complete commissioning checklists and assist in the development and updating of commissioning checklists and reports.
  • Monitor and revise startup and commissioning activities, applying industry best practices and addressing any necessary adjustments.
  • Provide regular status/progress updates on all activities based on a scheduled timeline.

Resource & Operations Management:
  • Collaborate with team members to source and assign appropriate commissioning resources for effective operations.
  • Lead daily field commissioning activities, including scheduling, reporting, and troubleshooting.
  • Document operational tasks, report to management, and assist in training new employees.
  • Track procurement of commissioning equipment, ensuring calibration and compliance with reporting standards.

Field Expertise:
  • Provide technical oversight and expertise during project start-up and commissioning.
  • Build strong relationships with project teams to meet acceptance criteria and deliver high-quality, timely results.

Experience, Skills & Abilities:
  • Preferred experience in quality assurance and/or construction with BESS projects.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based construction management systems (e.g., Procore, Office 365).
  • Proven leadership in managing contract and in-house teams for testing and commissioning deliverables.
  • Field experience in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation equipment, including control, low, medium, and DC voltages, Motor Control Centers (MCC), transformers, and protection relays/meters (preferred).
  • Strong safety record, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills.
  • Knowledge of project plans, specifications, and construction practices, with a team-oriented mindset.
