Contract Process Engineer – API Batch Manufacturing
Location: Charles City, IA

Position Overview:
Our client in Charles City, Iowa, is seeking several Contract Process Engineers to support API batch manufacturing operations. This role focuses on designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting chemical processes for the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), ensuring compliance with cGMP standards, and contributing to technology transfer and process improvement projects within a fast-paced CDMO environment.

Key Process Engineering Responsibilities:

  • Design, scale up, and optimize batch chemical processes, including reactions, filtration, drying, distillation, and extraction for API production.
  • Evaluate equipment and systems, recommending enhancements to improve yield, safety, and reliability.
  • Analyze production and laboratory data to identify and resolve process challenges, troubleshoot deviations, and support corrective actions.
  • Support technology transfer, process validation, and the transition from lab to commercial-scale manufacturing.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation such as process flow diagrams, batch records, validation reports, SOPs, and CAPA documents.
  • Ensure full compliance with cGMP, safety, and regulatory requirements in all operations.
  • Work collaboratively with QA/QC, manufacturing, and R&D teams to drive quality and meet project goals.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on reducing cycle times, increasing yields, and enhancing product quality.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • Proven experience in pharmaceutical process engineering or API batch manufacturing. Hands-on involvement with the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) using batch processing methods is strongly-preferred, however, the right Chemical Engineer or Process Engineer from the pharmaceutical industry that understands batch processing, but has not used active ingredients may be considered, provided they have very strong Chemistry, very strong knowledge of cGMP standards, and very strong scale-up.
  • Strong foundation in chemical engineering principles, process simulation, and risk management. 
  • Proficiency in data analysis, process troubleshooting, documentation, and technical communication.
  • Experience with cGMP and pharma regulatory requirements.

Preferred:
B.S. in Chemical Engineering from University of Puerto Rico (Mayaguez Campus)
Experience in the Pharmaceutical, Electronic, and/ or  Chemical industries.
Lean and Six Sigma methodologies
Project management
Process validation and equipment qualification
 
  • Familiarity with automated batch control systems and process simulation tools.
  • Previous work in a CDMO environment is a plus.
