Description

The Clinical Nurse Specialist serves as a resource/consultant for all departments regarding clinical specialty, conducts/ participates in research across varied patient populations. The CNS educates and guides the nursing staff and health care team members in the provision of patient care. Develops, coordinates, delivers and /or evaluates educational activities for hospital staff, patients and family members. Leads outcome-based approach to patient care by insuring evidence-based practice and interdisciplinary care delivery.

Essential Duties:

  • Consultant Clinical resource with staff on management of complex cases. Makes rounds for the purposes of monitoring and ensuring quality patient care. Collects and communicates patient data to the appropriate member of the healthcare team. Facilitates communication among departments and multidisciplinary team to develop a plan of care and ensure continuity of care. Analyzes surveillance data for trends, patterns, or clusters to improve patient care and system management. Represents department on hospital wide committees. Maintains membership on the APRN shared governance council. Recognizes sentinel events and participates in the investigation process. Contributes to staff performance appraisal. Reviews patient medical records, to improve patient care and system management.
  • Clinical Expert Considers financial impact when planning for quality patient care. Expert clinician which implements, monitors, and evaluates clinical protocols, standards of care, practice guidelines, policies and procedures within clinical specialty. Utilizes advanced practice knowledge of health assessment, pathophysiology, and pharmacology through the continuum of care. Navigates the multidisciplinary system of resources to meet the needs of the patient. Attends education training, in-services, workshops, and seminars and disseminates pertinent information.
  • Research Integrate nursing research and evidence based practice with performance improvement activities and policies and procedures. Implement hospital wide initiatives using research and evidenced based practice that improves quality of care and patient outcomes. Assist staff in achieving and maintaining evidenced based practice standards of care. Utilizes systems and change theory to identify the most effective interventions in achieving quality, service and cost effective patient care outcomes. Interprets, disseminates and utilizes nursing research findings in clinical specialty area. Identifies researchable patient problems or need for clinical inquiry projects. Design and conduct research and evidenced based practice studies in clinical specialty.
  • Educator Provides direct clinical coaching to nursing staff. Assist in educational needs assessment of the hospital, nursing staff and patient/family. Uses principles of adult learning in developing education strategies. Facilitates the orientation of new hire nurses in coordination with the Education Department and Unit Manager. Develop goals, objectives and lesson plans and conducts clinical specialty educational offerings. Evaluates the effectiveness of education presentation. Collaborates with clinical and administrative colleagues for the development and implementation of joint educational programs. Collaborates with the Education and Staff Development Department on the development and implementation of housewide educational initiatives. Integrate research and evidence based practice into the development, review and revision of patient education materials. Identifies and communicates learning opportunities available for staff within the hospital and community. Facilitates the training of clinical nurse specialist students and other nursing students as necessary in coordination with the Education Department. Collaborate with administration team and medical staff to support community outreach programs.
  • Leader Serves as a professional role model for excellence in care delivery at the bedside. Actively mentors staff in professional development. Promote competent, compassionate and professional nursing care for patients and families. Engages staff in identifying risk reduction strategies to deliver safer patient care. Recognizes behaviors and implements strategies to optimize teamwork and professional behavior. Collaborate with staff nurses and lead the development and implementation of unit based initiatives to improve quality of care patient outcomes. Leads nursing and multidisciplinary groups in implementing innovative patient care programs that address patient care issues across the continuum of care. Builds and maintains positive collaborative professional relationships with hospital and medical staff. Communicates in an effective manner with nursing leadership regarding ongoing projects, work activities and other issues or concerns relating to clinical specialty. Collaborates with Unit Manager in the appropriate utilization of resources and establishing cost effective systems for the delivery of quality patient care. Ensure that the clinical specialty is in compliance with local, state and federal rules, recommendations, Title 22, regulations Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), The Joint Commission, and other regulatory bodies. Represent the hospital at national, state, and local professional organizations.
  • Other Performs other duties as necessary for the smooth operation of the department and the hospital.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Master's degree Nursing Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Registered Nursing
  • Req 5 years Acute care nursing experience.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic oral and written communication skills.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to work independently with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Req Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as Internet and access and utilization.
  • Req Ability to participate in and utilize research for improvement of patient-care practices.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Specialty Certification If no certification upon hire, one must be obtained within 12 months of hire and maintain renewal.


Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing)
  • Req Clinical Nurse Specialist - CNS
  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $133,120.00 - $219,648.00.
