Job Summary
The Restoration Technician will lead a team at Kamehameha Schools Maui (KS Maui) to maintain and restore ʻāina Pauahi on Maui in alignment with ʻĀina Pauahi's regional conservation goals. Reporting to the Program Director, Hoʻōla ʻĀina (Conservation Education and Engagement), this role includes overseeing various restoration tasks such as managing invasive species, propagating, and planting native vegetation, and monitoring wildlife. This position instructs and leads other team members, including kumu, haumāna, community partners, and volunteers, while planning and implementing restoration activities in coordination with project leaders.
This role demands a high level of physical stamina and must effectively build and maintain relationships with volunteers and partners. Requires maintaining regular documentation and reporting of data related to restoration efforts. Additionally, this role is expected to be an integral member of the KS Maui ʻohana, an active partner with ʻĀina Pauahi, serves as a vital resource for restoration operations and will communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, including the community and conservation partners.
Essential Responsibilities
Project Restoration and Maintenance
Under the direction of the Program Director, Hoʻōla ʻĀina (Conservation Education and Engagement), oversees various specialty tasks and projects but not limited to invasive species management, native vegetation propagation and out planting, and wildlife monitoring.
Coordinates extensive habitat restoration, grazing infrastructure, monitoring of survey plots, and aids in establishing new monitoring efforts for native species.
Leads and instructs restoration team members (e.g. kumu, haumāna, community partners and volunteers), and is responsible for coordinating project logistics.
Leads volunteer workdays, planning and implementing the hands-on experience that supports and is in alignment with ʻĀina Pauahi needs, Kamehameha Schools' mission, and KS Maui's values.
Oversees the KS Maui seed bank, biochar activities on campus and with partners, and greenhouse operations and maintenance in partnership with the Program Director, Hoʻōla ʻĀina (Conservation Education and Engagement) and the Program Director, Hoʻohua ʻĀina (Food Systems and Sustainability).
Coordinates with KS Maui Operations to ensure routine maintenance of all project equipment.
Data Management and Reporting
Required to document, report, and share all data pertinent to operations on a regular basis.
Produce concise, informative reports on managed projects and tasks as needed.
Develop and implement protocols for effective geographic and data management.
Assess tasks to identify successes and lessons learned and communicate results to KS Maui and ʻĀina Pauahi (e.g. written reports, presentations, or other methods).
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.
Bachelor's degree in related discipline or Vocational degree in science-related field.
Minimum 3 years related experience in natural resources, agriculture, conservation, restoration, outdoor management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strong working knowledge of natural systems; ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete restoration activities.
Strong working knowledge of conservation science and practice.
Knowledge of curriculum and/or traditional cultural practices and confident in the delivery of content and practices to haumāna using a variety of instructional materials, techniques, and equipment.
Experience in direct haumāna engagement and management, effectively directing activities and maintaining a structured, orderly environment.
Valid driver's license.
State of Hawaiʻi hunting license and State of Hawaiʻi hunter education course and certificate of completion.
Certification validating completion of a firearms training and ability to display full competence in use of firearms, including firearm safety.
Documented professional experience in chemical control of invasive species.
Current water safety and complete First Aid, CPR, AED, and Wilderness First Aid certifications or the ability to obtain the required certifications within 9 months of employment.
Demonstrated ability to be water competent in an ocean environment and able to anticipate, avoid, and survive common crisis situations, as well as to recognize threats and assist those in need.
Strong knowledge of culturally based land/resource management.
Proficient in handling and maintaining various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mowers, brush cutters, weed eaters, chain saw, engine powered chipper/shredder, other heavy and light equipment, hand tools, two-way radios, handheld GIS systems, etc.).
Excellent interpersonal skills to work successfully with a diverse range of internal staff and external individuals and groups.
Strong communication and writing skills to prepare written reports, correspondence, and effective presentations.
Excellent problem-solving skills to identify and resolve existing or potential problems.
Able to work independently with minimal supervision, manage time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays as well as working in austere and off-grid conditions to include various weather systems and conditions.
Working knowledge of computer systems and common software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Web browsers) and familiarity with ArcMap GIS and other database systems.
Demonstrates knowledge of Hawaiian culture-based education, and KS E Ola! learner outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in the fields of conservation, restoration, environmental education/consulting with schools.
Strong familiarity with concepts and science, technology, engineering, and math applications in conservation and restoration.
Experience in ungulate management, specifically hunting for management and subsistence.
Physical Requirements
Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk and hear.
Regularly required to operate KS vehicle.
Frequently stands and/or walks, write by hand.
Frequently lifts and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 100 pounds.
Frequently twists, bends, stoops, squats, kneels, crawls, climbs, reaches, or works above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
Frequently works with pesticides and or other chemical substances.
Frequently operate and maintain power tools, including but not limited to, chain saw, weed eater, mechanical fence post driver.
Frequently operate and maintain nursey and seed bank equipment and hand tools, including but not limited to sickle, clippers, cutters, etc.
Working Conditions
This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Work is conducted in an office/school environment and off-grid austere locations with exposure to various weather systems and conditions and uneven terrain.
Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours, but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
