Description

The Director of Marketing Communications and Copywriting is responsible for helping to build and sustain Harbor Freight's brand and reputation as well as its various tool brands in the marketplace. Working collaboratively with senior leadership, this Director will develop and implement marketing communication strategies and messages that reflect the company's core principles. Further, this leader will drive our product-focused public relations strategy and manage the tactical execution of activities that support the needs of the company. Accordingly, this role is not focused on generating press for the company and its leaders, but rather is focused on supporting product launches, communications concerning the value that we deliver to our customers and extending our brand-building efforts.

The Director of Marketing Communications and Copywriting will also define the voice of Harbor Freight, set copywriting standards, and create style guides that will help ensure consistency in execution. In addition to directly leading the Copywriting and Public Relations functions within Marketing, the Director of Marketing Communications and Copywriting will also provide indirect guidance to other teams with content development responsibilities (including but not limited to Digital Marketing, Brand Marketing, Product Marketing, Social Media, E-Commerce, Merchandising, and Corporate Communications).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a communications and copywriting strategy for Harbor Freight that builds and maintains a positive corporate brand.  
  • Refine the marketing voice of Harbor Freight as needed and integrate with the existing organization's processes to ensure all marketing communications reflect that voice.  
  • Create and manage copywriting standards and a communications style guide that drive consistency in how Harbor Freight communicates across all channels.            
  • Address the team's content and copy needs as required to support digital marketing, video creation, influencer management, web content, store signage, and other marketing activities.            
  • Build and maintain positive professional relationships with various members of the media, specifically those outlets who specialize in tools or tool-related industries.  
  • Act as a company spokesperson and respond to product or brand related media inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Working with the Influencer Marketing and Merchandising teams, coordinate and fulfill media requests for product, and proactively identify media outlets to facilitate product reviews.     
  • Define the product and brand related content strategy for the Corporate Newsroom and set the standard for and review product and brand related press releases as needed.      
  • Assist leadership in developing presentations, speeches, and other messages as required; write communications coming from Harbor Freight's executive leaders as requested.
  • Develop strategies and programs that create a positive relationship with Harbor Freight's local communities and customers in support of marketing initiatives.        
  • Stay current on the competitive landscape and their communication strategies to ensure Harbor Freight's message and approach remain fresh and relevant.            
  • Monitor and maintain a database of earned media coverage and use data where appropriate to measure the effectiveness of our approach, including but not limited to, Harbor Freight's marketing mix model.      
  • Serve as coach and mentor to other content development resources across Harbor Freight to help develop their abilities.

Requirements

Education and Experience
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree required. Preferably in Communications, English, Journalism or similar.
Years of Experience
  • Minimum 10 years in a communications role preferably in public relations, media, or brand messaging
