The SMT Operator is responsible for the setup and operation of Surface-Mount Technology (SMT) equipment used in electronic assembly. This role includes adjusting machine speed, temperature, and related parameters to accommodate varying product types and sizes while ensuring high-quality production.
Principal Accountabilities- Set up and operate SMT assembly equipment including screen printers, glue dispensers, pick‑and‑place machines, and reflow ovens.
- Work with SMT electronic components and understand SMT assembly processes.
- Properly clean and prepare circuit boards prior to assembly.
- Perform basic soldering and rework of SMT components; complete company-provided solder training as required.
- Pick components and prepare manufacturing kits.
- Perform visual inspection of SMT assemblies to ensure quality and compliance.
- Maintain accurate production and job-tracking records.
- Interpret IPC‑A‑610 standards and customer specifications for product acceptability.
- Use common hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, and related equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Take responsibility for workmanship, quality, and throughput.
- Practice safe work habits and report any unsafe conditions.
- Train and assist co‑workers when issues arise.
- Follow applicable quality procedures and work instructions.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous electronics or SMT manufacturing experience preferred.
- Basic soldering skills with the ability to correctly identify and insert components.
- General understanding of manufacturing processes.
- Ability to read and interpret assembly prints and follow verbal instructions.
- Strong communication skills; must work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Mechanical assembly and soldering aptitude.
- Good eyesight, finger dexterity, and ability to perform repetitive tasks.
- Computer proficiency, including basic word processing and spreadsheet use.
- Strong analytical, math, and problem-solving abilities.
