Job SummaryTo support our extraordinary teams who build great products and contribute to our growth, we're looking to add a Mechanical Design Manager located in Prai, Penang.
Manager Mechanical Design & Assembly Engineering will lead the end-to-end development and deployment of mechanical solutions for PCBA mechanical assembly, box build, and system-level assemblies, serving as the internal subject matter expert and primary technical interface with customers.
The role encompasses the design and validation of sheet metal, plastic, and enclosure assemblies, along with the development of tooling, jigs, and fixtures to ensure manufacturability, quality, and cost efficiency.
It also requires strong integration between engineering and operations through the effective use of ERP and shop floor/MES systems, ensuring accurate BOM management, change control, and a seamless NPI-to-production transition. In addition, the role supports automation, AI tool adoption, and Industry 4.0 initiatives to enhance productivity, traceability, and overall manufacturing performance.
What a typical day looks like:
Lead mechanical design, validation, and deployment for PCBA mechanical assembly, box build, and system-level mechanical assemblies.
Serve as the mechanical SME for tooling, jigs, fixtures, and assembly process design across NPI and sustaining programs.
Lead and participate in DFM/DFA, risk assessments, and design reviews with customers.
Review and approve mechanical concepts to ensure DFM/DFA, quality, safety, ergonomics, and cost targets are met.
Act as a primary technical interface to customers for mechanical assembly, tooling concepts, and manufacturing feasibility.
Translate customer requirements into scalable, cost-effective, and automation-ready mechanical solutions.
Drive mechanical readiness from prototype, pilot, ramp, to mass production in line with Flex NPI governance.
Ensure tooling, jigs, and fixtures are properly designed, qualified, and released prior to production.
Partner with Manufacturing Engineering, Tooling, Automation, Quality, and Program teams to ensure on-time program execution.
Provide deep technical support for sheet metal assemblies, enclosures, and plastic mechanical assemblies, including fastening, alignment, tolerances, and structural integrity.
Support cost optimization through design simplification, component standardization, and local sourcing strategies.
Design and optimize production tooling, jigs, and fixtures to improve assembly efficiency, quality, and repeatability.
Collaborate with internal teams and suppliers on tool fabrication, qualification, and deployment.
Act as the technical interface with customers for mechanical design solutions.
Provide recommendations on optimal design approaches, materials, and manufacturing methods.
Support accurate BOM structuring, revision control, and engineering change management (ECN/ECO) within ERP.
Integrate mechanical design outputs with shop floor execution systems (MES / shop floor control systems).
Support digitalization of manufacturing processes, including data capture, reporting, and analytics.
Identify opportunities to integrate basic automation in assembly processes.
Utilize AI tools (design optimization, simulation assistance, documentation automation) to improve engineering productivity.
Support implementation of smart manufacturing concepts.
The experience we're looking to add to our team:
Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
Sound engineering knowledge and experience to enable effective understanding of customer requirements and the operating environment.
Strong knowledge and hands-on experience in sheet metal and plastic mechanical assemblies, including enclosures, tolerancing, fastening methods, and manufacturability considerations.
Cost-conscious with the ability to critically analyse new and existing designs to drive cost reduction.
Meticulous approach to quality with familiarity in FMEA and risk assessment.
Proven experience with design tools/software, including 3D design packages (preferably Mechanical Desktop, Creo, or SolidWorks).
Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including production personnel and executives, both internal and external.
Exposure to automation systems and basic AI-assisted engineering tools.
Experience with Industry 4.0 / smart manufacturing concepts is a strong advantage.
Experience in high-mix, high-volume EMS or electronics manufacturing environments.
Strong technical leadership with ownership, accountability, and bias for action.
Ability to influence cross-functional and global teams.
Customer-focused, data-driven, and results-oriented mindset.
