Prepare to Lead – Join First Student as a Manager in Development and Gain Hands-On Experience Across Key Areas of the Business!

The Manager in Development (MID) role is a short-term transitional position designed to prepare individuals for management through work assignments and comprehensive training. MIDs rotate through key departments such as safety, finance, operations, maintenance, human resources, labor relations, and legal. They develop a strong management foundation while working closely with location and corporate staff. Responsibilities include managing safety risks, financial decision-making, operational efficiency, employee management, and labor relations, all while ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.

Major Responsibilities

  • Work closely with management staff to develop skill set.
  • Take part in rotations with multiple departments, including but not limited to: dispatch, road supervision, safety, finance, and HR.
  • Develop partnerships with location and corporate staff.
  • Showcase your strong management foundation and knowledge of the business.
  • Perform any related duties that are required or assigned

    Learning Assignments
    1) Safety
    Manage and mitigate safety risks across a wide range of areas including accident and incident prevention, injury prevention, collision investigation, driver training and development, and Department of Transportation regulatory compliance.

    2) Finance and Accounting
    Leverage strategic decision-making relating to current assets, current liabilities and the management of working capital.

    3) Operations
    Ensure the efficient and profitable coordination and deployment of all services and resources within our locations.

    4) Maintenance
    Ensure the continuity of service through the maintenance and sustainability of the fleet and support facility assets in conjunction with other Group and Business Division functions.

    5) Security
    Apply a multi-layered approach efficiently and effectively to security management, integrating best practices in holistic response to risk in a transportation operation.

    6) Sales
    Make strategic decisions for growth by leveraging skills, knowledge, and leading practices in the competition for transportation business.

    7) Human Resource
    Foster an inclusive culture by focusing on attracting, developing, and managing our most important asset: our employees.

    8) Labor Relations
    Accomplish management and operational objectives within the confines of a labor agreement.

    9) Legal
    Identify and mitigate legal, regulatory and commercial risk to the business across a wide range of areas.


Minimum Education or Certifications Required

  • High School Diploma/GED; Bachelor's degree is a Plus.


Minimum Experience or Skills Required

  • 3-4 years of Transportation/Logistics experience and/or 1-2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Active Learning – Quickly process new information, knowledge, and experiences, regularly capitalizing on learning opportunities, and applying new information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Must be proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of programs.
  • Ability to work a full-time flexible schedule, including morning, night, and weekend shifts.
  • Valid State Driver's License.
  • Ability to relocate within the specified region.
