The Genetic Counselor will provide cancer genetic counseling to patients in our Cancer Center as well as their families/caregivers, and to community members, while also collaborating with cancer providers from all subspecialties. He/She will address a patient's risk to have a hereditary risk to develop cancer or recurrence. It is often a crucial component while strategizing the care plan for a new cancer diagnosis. Cancer genetic test results often influence decisions about surgery and medical treatment. Common indications for patient referral include family or personal history of ovarian, breast, colon or pancreatic cancer. Other indications might include suspected germline pathogenic variants after somatic molecular genetic or pathology tests.
Patients are informed about the nature and the etiology of the condition(s) in question. Counseling includes an explanation of dominant and recessive inheritance patterns, reduced penetrance and variable expressivity, the nature of tumor-suppressor genes and genetic testing. Potential outcomes of testing are discussed including the possibility of a pathogenic variant or variant of uncertain significance (VUS), including how each result would be handled. The counselor addresses the psychosocial aspects of predictive genetic testing in this setting.
