The VA Northern California VA Health Care System (VANCHCS) is seeking an Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health to join the Chief of Staff and the Executive Leadership team. The incumbent will help lead the department and Health Care System in fulfilling its mission as a leader in Veteran's health care. The ACOS for Mental Health will be organized and dynamic, with the responsibility for planning, developing, coordinating, directing, and evaluating the immediate and future organization needs of the service.  

The ACOS for MH will directly oversee the interprofessional teams organized around program lines, including General Mental Health (GMH), Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC), Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery Services (ICMHRS), Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program (PSR), Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center (PRRC), Addiction Recovery and Treatment Services (ARTS), Cognitive Rehab, Palliative Mental Health, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Compensated Work Therapy (CWT)/Supported Employment (SE), Mental Health Intensive Case Management (MHICM), Residency Program, Neuropsychology and more.

The service comprises over 260 interdisciplinary staff (psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing and others) working with other VA employees, divisions, departments and services (e.g., Primary Care, Pharmacy). These employees are located at multiple sites of care over a 40,000 sq. mile area of Northern California. Main sites of care include the Sacramento VA Medical Center (a level I-B acute care facility), the Martinez VA ASC (and Outpatient Clinics, with a CARF accredited inpatient rehabilitation unit and 120-bed SNF/Community Living Center), and the USAF David Grant Medical Center (Travis AFB). Additionally, care is provided at 10 Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) throughout the Northern California region, from the East Bay to the Oregon border.

We are affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, Davis Health (UCDH). The selected candidate may be eligible to receive a clinical appointment commensurate with their academic experience.

Qualified candidates will be a seasoned psychiatrist or psychologist who demonstrates extensive and progressive leadership experience, both as a clinician and an administrator. The candidate will possess the ability to promote innovation, inspire organizational excellence, be able to build teams, and coach clinical leaders as they work toward common goals. The incumbent will call upon their experience in health care operations and planning to implement and promote efficient patient flow and timely access. The Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health will need to have exceptional interpersonal skills, as well as operational and financial skills.  The successful candidate must have the ability to meet VA established performance measure goals and possess a thorough knowledge of the standards of the Veterans Health Administration and other accrediting bodies.  The ideal candidate will possess the ability to promote innovation and lean management, bring leadership experience in enhancing telehealth services and be able to lead others and inspire organizational excellence.

No on-call at present time. The successful candidate will be expected to travel on occasion on site visits to the outlying clinics where MH services are provided. 

Candidate must be: 1) US Citizen, 2) board Eligible/Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) or Doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), and 3) Have full, unrestricted license in any state.

Relocation expenses may be paid, and Relocation/Retention incentives may be authorized.
