Summary:

The Outreach Specialist will provide prevention resources and intervention services to students and families at risk of and experiencing homelessness. The Outreach Specialist will identify and advocate for the needs of students and families by removing barriers, as well as ensure access to support services that enable a student's education to continue uninterrupted and families to secure non-transitional housing. The Outreach specialist will coordinate and collaborate with educational and community systems to secure essential resources for students and families. The Outreach Specialist reports directly to the Program Director.

Job Description:

Provide empowering communication and individualized support by partnering with students and families to identify their strengths and utilize their skills to effectively advance toward their goals. Provide resources for community support programs (including, but not limited to: food, clothing, homelessness, and utility assistance). Educate on non-transitional housing options and programs. Provide referral assistance to secure whole health providers, wellness support programs, and natural resources. Link with financial entitlements and applications. Refer to and give information on educational and vocational resources and programs. Align and coordinate care between multi-systemic providers. Coordinate and participate in community connection events. Track program utilization and outcome information. Coordinate ongoing care and referral to specific levels of case management if appropriate. Utilize case management strategies and knowledge of the cycle of homelessness to empower students, families, and unaccompanied youth to identify their strengths and develop skills that will effectively advance them toward their goals. Expand community engagement by identifying new local resources and strengthening existing partnerships through clear communication and mutual support. Participate in trainings, meetings, and supervisions to support and encourage learning and teamwork. Participate in donation, education, and training events for homeless students and families in collaboration with educational and community partners. Knowledge of human development and behavior including individual, family, and group. Ability to conduct individual and family interviews and use them to identify individual and family issues and goals. Ability to understand and accept the needs and rights of others and to work with children and/or adults who are physically challenged and/or have emotional disabilities. Knowledge of the McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Ability to travel and meet with individuals in a variety of settings.

Qualifications:

This position requires one of the following combinations of education and experience:

A Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited college or university with experience working with at-risk youth and families or a Bachelor's degree in Social Work (BSW), from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of work experience in human services including experience working with at risk youth and families. 

Physical requirements of this position include the ability to see well enough to do things like drive and read, hear well enough to be able to communicate with others, and be able to hear things like a smoke alarm and phone ringing, as well as be able to ambulate throughout locations including climbing stairs, stooping and kneeling as needed. Must have finger and manual dexterity to make accurate, coordinated movements of fingers, arms, hands to grasp, move or carry objects, be able to bend and reach.  Wear personal protective equipment as required.
