Incumbents will handle civil litigation matters in state court, in federal court, and before administrative bodies. Duties include conducting discovery; arguing motions; presenting evidence at hearings; preparing for trials before judges and juries, participating in all phases of said trials; researching and preparing appellate briefs and arguing appeals at all appellate levels; and providing legal advice and opinions to City officials, departments, and employees. Substantive areas of law will include general tort, personal injury, administrative, civil rights, and equity.

 

About Us:  The City Counselor's Office is the Civil Law Department for the City of St. Louis.  It houses more than 50 lawyers and 20 support staff.  The City Counselor serves as chief counsel to elected City officials, City boards and commission, as well as City departments and agencies – including the St. Louis Development Corporation, the Metropolitan Police Department, and St. Louis Lambert International Airport ©2021.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • This attorney will handle moderately complex to complex civil litigation at the trial and appellate levels in both state court and federal court in the areas of civil rights, equity, general tort, personal injury, and administrative law. 
  • This attorney must possess significant civil litigation experience.
  • This attorney must possess a thorough knowledge of the administrative review process as well as civil rights, equity, general tort, and personal injury.
  • This attorney must possess excellent research and writing skills.
  • This attorney will research and prepare appellate briefs and argue appeals at all appellate levels in the state court and the federal court.
  • This attorney will prepare for trials before judges and juries, conducting discovery, arguing motions and participating in all phases of said trials.
  • Responsible for working independently and exercising sound judgment on a daily basis.
