In this role, you will be the face of our local arenas, ensuring that everyone from toddlers taking their first steps on ice to seasoned hockey players has a safe and enjoyable experience. As a Skate Monitor within the Community Services Department, you will play a vital role in supervising public skating and shinny hockey sessions. You are responsible for ensuring that all participants follow safety requirements and arena rules to maintain a secure environment for both patrons and staff. Beyond safety, you will act as a key point of contact, providing information about arena programs and assisting the public with their needs. You will also handle administrative tasks such as tracking program attendance and verifying fee payments for shinny participants. This position requires a blend of independent judgment and strong interpersonal skills to manage diverse groups of people. Ultimately, your presence ensures our arena programs, like Member Skate and Shinny, run smoothly and professionally. 

What will you do?

  • Supervise public skating and shinny hockey as scheduled
  • Assist, direct, and provide information to the public regarding arena programs
  • Track program attendance and ensure shinny participants have paid their fees
  • Advise participants of safety requirements
  • Follow and enforce rules to ensure the safety of patrons and staff
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or GED
  • Current certifications in First Aid, CPR C, and AED
  • Previous experience working with the public, including children and/or adults
  • Demonstrated ability to skate
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

Skills required for success:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with the community
  • Ability to work independently under minimal or no supervision
  • Excellent observational skills to monitor ice safety and rule compliance

Conditions of Employment:

  • Possession of your own skates and helmet
  • Willingness to work in various arena locations across the city
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance
  • Possession of current Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • You will be working primarily within arena environments, which involves cold temperatures and on-ice activity
  • Ability and willingness to work mainly evenings and weekends throughout the week
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states
