As an Outdoor Program Leader, you'll be a skilled instructor and inspiring facilitator for a wide range of participants from day camps and school field trips to engaging community programs. You'll plan and lead dynamic outdoor experiences across a diverse range of activities.

What will you do?

• Adventure Sports: Teach cycling adventures, Paddle Canada–certified tandem canoeing, and engaging archery sessions.
• Wilderness Skills: Instruct shelter building, fire building, and practical outdoor survival skills through hands-on activities.
• Navigation & Science: Explore orienteering, GPS navigation, and environmental science through fun, interactive challenges.
• Winter Expeditions: Get outside with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice biking, and kicksledding adventures.
• Community Engagement: Direct outdoor day camp adventures, fun and flexible programs for children, families and adults, and exciting outreach opportunities.
• Other related duties as required

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Practical experience working with the general public, children, youth, and diverse program participant groups

Assets:

• Outdoor Adventure Sports Experience
• Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent) or higher

Skills required for success:

• Ability to operate necessary equipment such as riding a bike, or cross country skiing
• Ability to work safely outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions, as well as in safety-sensitive environments
• Proficiency to lead timed programs that entertain and educate participants, while managing multiple tasks effectively and safely
• Knowledge of physical literacy and recreation program objectives, policies, and procedures
• Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage program participants, collaborate with team members and supervisors
• Ability to utilize mobile digital tools, including Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets)  for documentation and communication
• Capable of the safe handling, use, and maintenance of program materials and equipment

Conditions of Employment:

• Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
• Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance
• Possession of Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
• Ability to attend fall training September 1-4, 2026 (all day each day)
• Ability to reliably travel to worksites across the city, which may vary daily
• Provides clear work availability and consistently maintains reliable scheduling that meets the needs of the position once hired

Work Environment:

• Note: Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
• The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
• Ability to work shifts that are any day of the week beginning as early as 7:00 a.m.
• Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation to work at various locations in the city
• Evenings, weekends, and holiday work is required
• Physically capable of sustained activity outdoors, including navigating slopes, unpaved trails, working in all weather conditions, and handling equipment and supplies such as bicycles and canoes
