Either way - we are looking for people across all our rich diversity to perform field and laboratory quality assurance testing on soil, aggregates, asphalt and cement concrete products for City of Edmonton construction projects.

Here is your chance to apply your knowledge of materials testing, your passion for working outside and your skills in collaboration to support critical quality assurance work in our section. Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve timely and accurate results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style.

What will you do?:

  • Sample asphalt, soils, concrete, gravel and other related materials
  • Perform inspections of asphalt and concrete plants that are producing materials for use on City of Edmonton construction projects
  • Perform field coring on asphalt mixes for thickness and compaction determination
  • Complete preventative maintenance and ensure all equipment is properly maintained to ensure it is in good and safe working order
  • Operate field and laboratory test equipment
  • Record test results and prepare standard test reports
  • Perform all duties in accordance with provincial and municipal Occupational Health & Safety regulations
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent or higher, supplemented by some courses in Civil or Materials Technology from a recognized technical institute
  • Knowledge of construction materials testing laboratory equipment and procedures
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and record data with a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to make decisions and perform work independently as well as with a team in a field environment
  • Ability to perform the assigned tasks, such as repetitive bending and lifting up to 50 lbs (equipment, samples, etc), in various weather, environmental, traffic and construction conditions
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to use Google Workspace
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring is a requirement for this position

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current 5 year driver's abstract
  • A minimum of 1 year driving experience holding at least a Class 5 drivers' license in any province/country (including GDLs or equivalents)
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring

Work Environment:

  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform field activities, including heavy lifting of equipment and samples up to 35 kg, 20 to 30 times per day, and repetitive bending in all weather, traffic, and construction conditions

Up to 32 Temporary full-time positions for an expected duration of up to  11 months

Successful candidates may be eligible for the 2027 recall season

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Sunday-Saturday, 24/7 coverage. Applicants may be required to work shift work, on short notice, holidays, and after hours and early morning shifts, as required to fulfill operational requirements

Salary: $27.401 - $34.318 (Hourly)
