Description

Fire Apparatus Technicians are responsible for performing maintenance, major/heavy & minor/light repairs, modifications and overhauls to Municipal vehicles and Fire equipment. These duties are accomplished by accurately diagnosing, examining, testing, repairing and rebuilding municipal vehicles and fire equipment.

The work locations may vary between light repair service shops and heavy overhaul shops as well as in the field using a service truck. This may include duties such as maintenance of hoists and shop equipment, etc….

Selected individuals may be assigned solely to the area of new vehicle builds or to working in the field with a service truck

What will you do?

  • Repair, overhaul, service, inspect, commission new equipment & attachments, diagnose the complete range of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, structural and all other failures occurring to heavy and light duty units, fire units, equipment components and attachments common to the municipal utility fleets and fire units
  • Perform road calls and call out for emergency repairs on equipment including the ERD to keep the fire apparatus operational
  • Complete field repairs as assigned or needed. Deliver units to commercial vendors, road and field test units, and operate a wide range of units to assist in diagnosis and repair
  • Review branch maintenance information systems, repair manuals, technical bulletins, operating manuals, corporate, department and branch procedural manuals, schematics, material safety data sheets, safety handbooks and blueprints in order to accurately diagnose, repair and order parts for the jobs assigned
  • Complete the required administration procedures and forms to ensure the proper recording and communication of work recommended and/or completed (PM inspection sheets, major repair authorization forms, provincial certification forms, time entries, police inspections, etc…) using Fleet Management System Software (EX: M5, or any other software required) to perform data entry and time entry
  • Attend and participate in safety and information meetings
  • Attend and participate in health and safety training and be knowledgeable about chemicals and workplace hazards
  • Advise co-workers, forepersons, controllers, leadership & management of any health and safety concerns
  • Attend and participate in environmental training, follow approved environmental operating procedures and advise leadership staff, management of any work related environmental concerns
  • Greet and assist customers in defining and identifying problems and obtaining services offered by the branch
  • Answer phones and provide backup to the office and leadership staff as required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
