Crew Leader / Labourer II - Southwest Sports Fields/Active Pathways

What will you do?

During the summer season (approximately April to October), you will work as a Sports Fields Crew Leader, responsible for:

  • Provide field-level supervision and hands-on leadership for crews performing a wide variety of semi-skilled manual duties in the delivery of approved work plans
  • Assists with and provides leadership on, equipment operation and safe handling of small and large operational equipment, including toolcat, skid steer, tractors and various sports fields equipment such as top dresser, overseeder, fertilizer spreader, aerator and for snow clearing equipment such as snow blowers, walk-behind sweepers and brooms
  • Assigns crews to respond to a variety of seasonal requirements on the sports fields program
  • Ensure consistent delivery of approved work plans
  • Inspect and approve completed work
  • Be responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with customers, the public and crew members
  • Provide input into the annual budget process and monthly variance reporting processes
  • Assist with the registration, orientation and training of staff
  • Promote a safe work environment
  • Assist in the budget process
  • Monitor and evaluate attendance and performance of crew members
  • Apply knowledge of procedures for fleet services for equipment timelines, taking in equipment for repairs and services
  • Perform other related duties as required

During the winter season (approximately November to April), you will work as a Labourer II within Snow & Ice Control - Active Pathways and be responsible for:

  • Perform snow clearing duties and maintenance in areas such as city facilities, bike lanes, stair sets, parking lots, bridge decks, bus stops, sidewalks, safe mobility sites, and outdoor ice surfaces
  • Operate equipment such as plow trucks and parking lot sanders (2-ton and below), trailers, John Deere tractors (4000/5000-series or equivalent), John Deere 1500 series, Toolcats, Trackless MT-7's, loaders, and corresponding implements such as water tanks, sanders, buckets, brooms, blades, and blowers
  • Operate small powered equipment such as backpack blowers, snow blowers/throwers, BCS brooms, power brooms
  • Perform manual labour, including hand shoveling, using chippers and sandbox replenishing
  • Build outdoor rinks using water trucks or ice resurfacers
  • Ensure adherence to existing standard operating procedures, environmental and safety programs, and conduct daily Field Level Risk Assessments
  • Prioritizing work assignments and following instructions in work order
  • Conduct pre-use inspections for all tools, vehicles, and equipment
  • Provide customer service and respectfully communicate with the public & other employees
  • Coach and mentor less experienced labourers
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications

  • Two (2) year post-secondary diploma in a related field
  • Three (3) years progressively responsible experience in parks construction, maintenance and operations
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability including in an acting role
  • Experience with Toolcat, Skid Steer and Tractor

Skills required for success:

  • Possession of excellent communication skills (written and verbal), as well as analytical and problem solving skills
  • Exemplary customer service skills
  • Ability to monitor work plans for timeliness, quantity, quality, productivity, unit costing and accomplishments
  • Experience with Google Applications Suite, ArcGIS, POSSE, SLIM and SAP
  • Knowledge of other Civic Departments and agencies
  • Ability to work and make decisions both in a team setting and an independent manner
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures, bylaws, legislation and collective agreements
  • Experience monitoring and coaching employees and resolving issues with employees

Conditions of Employment:

  • Possession of Emergency First Aid Certificate and WHMIS training
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Physically capable of performing the duties assigned to the position, including repetitive heavy manual labour, such as lifting up to 50lbs, for extended periods of time under various weather conditions at various heights
  • Ability to work in the presence of dust, noise, inclement weather and adverse traffic conditions
  • This role requires 24/7 availability, including weekends and nights, particularly for Snow and Ice Control operations
  • Placement will be based on operational need, city-wide

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. 24/7 coverage is required.

Salary Range:
Labourer II: $34.208 (Hourly); $71,426.300 (Annually)
Crew Leader: $40.264 (Hourly); $84,071.230 (Annually)
