Are you an ambitious Engineer-in-Training (EIT) looking to make a measurable impact on climate action and sustainability? We are seeking a driven EIT to support and expand our ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) program—a key strategic initiative funded in part by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Working under the mentorship of a Professional Member, you will combine technical expertise and project management skills to support program growth, monitor performance, and evaluate projects across our operations. In this role, you will play an active part in advancing our broader Civic Operations Greenhouse Gas Management Plan and C627 Climate Resilience Policy.

What will you do?

• Lead the expansion and rollout of the ISO 50001 compliant Energy Management System (EnMS) across 20 additional City of Edmonton facilities, ensuring full compliance with funding agreements
• Partner with engineering, maintenance, asset management, utilities, and facility operators to establish EnMS processes, deliver employee training, and integrate ISO 50001 concepts into existing ISO 14000 (Enviso) systems
• Analyze, validate, and maintain historical energy profiles for electricity and natural gas consumption to evaluate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and report findings to internal partners
• Support and conduct building energy audits (e.g., ASHRAE Level 2) alongside senior engineers to identify conservation opportunities and support lifecycle management initiatives
• Draft scopes of work, support hiring processes, and supervise third-party consultants and contractors executing energy management program deliverables
• Manage ECCC funding requirements, including drafting the project charter, tracking costs and invoicing, and delivering required internal and external progress reports
• Develop business cases for organizational energy conservation, support updates to energy policies and procedures, and help Community Partners navigate relevant regulatory frameworks
• Integrate ISO 50001 principles with existing civic initiatives, including BOMA BEST certification, building benchmarking, Measurement & Verification (M&V), and Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS)
• Provide energy efficiency expertise and data-driven insights to inform the design, retrofitting, and operation of City-owned assets and infrastructure
• Review engineering reports, feasibility studies, and process changes to support broader City initiatives under the Climate Resilience Policy and Energy Transition Strategy

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
• Must be registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with APEGA (in good standing) and working towards a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
• Minimum 2 years of experience combining technical energy management (building operations, energy auditing, modeling, and data analytics) with project and business management (budgeting, scheduling, business case development, and performance reporting)

Assets:

• Practical experience in a public sector or engineering consulting environment, with hands-on knowledge of HVAC, building controls, and energy management or energy modeling software
• Specialized energy certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Building Operator Certification (BOC), or IPMVP/CMVP
• Proven background leading engineering or municipal projects, with a Project Management Professional (PMP) designation

Skills required for success:

• Applied understanding of building science and energy usage, with familiarity with standards and frameworks such as ASHRAE, LEED, IPMVP, ENERGY STAR, and ISO
• Strong capability to collect, model, and analyze data to draw actionable insights and support data-driven recommendations
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to deliver technical training, write reports, and build effective relationships across diverse teams
• Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines, with proficiency in productivity software (Google Suite/Microsoft Office)

Work Environment:

• This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
• This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
• The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Conditions of employment:

• Up to: 1 temporary full-time position for up to 11 months
• Hours of work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday
• Salary: $35.60 - $43.271 (Hourly)
• Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
• Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
