The City's Legal Services Branch is a dynamic, in-house law firm with over 50 lawyers serving more than 14,000 employees. The core focus of the City's articling program is to provide our students with the tools and opportunities to build the foundational skills of their legal career. As an Articling Student, you can expect to have full control of roughly 15-20 of your own litigation files. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work alongside other lawyers in our branch on a variety of other matters, and gain competency in the following areas:
What will you do?
- Oral and Written Advising for all of the City's business areas, including:
- City Operations
- Community Services
- Edmonton Transit Service
- Environmental
- Finance
- Human Rights
- Integrated Infrastructure Services
- Labour and Employment
- Real Estate
- Urban Planning and Economy
- Litigation, including drafting pleadings and appearing in court and before tribunals on behalf of the City, in the following areas:
- Personal Injury Litigation
- Human Rights and Employment Litigation
- Real Property Litigation
- Construction Litigation
- Bylaw Challenges and Litigation
- Administrative Law
- Contract Drafting in the following areas:
- Commercial and Real Estate Transactions
- Public-Private Partnerships
- Goods and Services Contracts, including Procurement Contracts
- Bylaw Drafting including the creation, review and amendment of municipal bylaws
- Bylaw Enforcement including hands-on court experience and the opportunity to conduct trials in bylaw court
Additional Information:
- The City will cover the cost of your Alberta Law Society membership, Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP) tuition, as well as any time off required to complete in-person PREP modules
- The City prides itself on our mentorship, providing all articling students with both a Litigation and Solicitor mentor to ensure our students receive a well-rounded articling experience
- The Legal Services Branch has a strong track record of offering post-articling employment to qualified articling students, with many of our current lawyers having begun their careers through the City's articling program
- Applicants must be currently or have been enrolled in an accredited Faculty of Law, have successfully completed the program by the commencement of their articles, and be eligible to article as a student-at-law within the Province of Alberta

Skills required for success:
- Strong Communication and Teamwork: Excellent verbal, written, and negotiating skills, coupled with the ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Independent Work and Problem-Solving: Ability to work independently with confidence under time constraints, demonstrating strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Technical Proficiency and Legal Experience: Proficiency in Google Workspace, strong legal research skills, computer literacy, and experience with Student Legal Services, particularly court experience

Conditions of employment and work environment:
- Up to: 1 temporary, full-time position for up to 12 months
- Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
- Salary Range: $69,711.732 (Annually)
