Shift Time Schedule: 7p-7a

Days: Variable days Monday-Friday, variable weekends.

Salary Scale: $36.05-46.17

Position Summary : Provides leadership and continuity in decision making for the organization by performing the following essential functions. On duty 24/7 and has administrative oversight in the absence of management and administrative teams. Maintains personal and professional growth in specialized skills, leadership, and ongoing education of high quality care to all patients. Committed to consistent standards of clinical excellence and nursing practice.

Education/Experience:

  • Must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
  • A minimum of two years acute care experience, including ER. Prior supervisory experience preferred. ICU/OB experience preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited RN program. Valid Iowa RN license. Current BLS, ACLS, NRP, and TNCC. STABLE optional. PALS optional.
  • CEU maintenance as required for licensure. Mandatory reporter training.
  • Must demonstrate effective leadership skills. High degree of empathetic listening, tact, and kindness toward others. Must work effectively as a member of the team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to all customers. Proficient in service recovery.
  • Basic computer knowledge. Sound technical skills in relation to medical equipment.
  • Technical and critical thinking nursing practices in relation to nursing judgment.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides oversight and leadership and represents administration and management during hours they are not present and is authorized to act on their behalf. Notifies manager/administrator of any significant problems or situations.
  • Coordination of staffing for current and on-coming shifts by reallocating or calling in additional staff. Notifying OR team and/or anesthesia providers after hours of emergency cases and/or additions to next day schedule.
  • Maintains accurate records of staffing and bed counts.
  • Receives and documents all call-ins and reports this to appropriate department manager.
  • Makes rounds to all departments assuring support for patient care. Identifies and utilizes available resources within nursing, delegating as necessary.
  • Collaborates with charge nurse for admissions and bed placements
  • Reviews all transfers forms for completion and compliance with EMTALA regulations, cosigns forms. Coordinates transfers based on patient acuity and available EMS.
  • Assists with tele-psychiatry consults and transfers.
  • Assists with patient care in all departments, including ER. Responds effectively and appropriately in emergent or critical situations including MET calls and codes.
  • Leads daily house wide huddle to increase communication throughout hospital and participates in inpatient unit discharge huddles each day.
  • Reviews all patient falls during shift, and responsible for the completion of the post-fall huddles with staff and documentation of the huddle.
  • Medication retrieval from Pyxis units or pharmacy after department hours, includes mixing of intravenous medications for immediate use. Notification of on call pharmacist with need of high-risk medications.
  • After department hours, handles immediate medical records release when requested, supplies from Nutritional Services, CMS and/or Materials Management for patient care.
  • Provides Notary Public services as requested.
  • Provides relief for switchboard
  • Notifies appropriate on-call staff of various departments, including engineering, housekeeping and information technology, of pertinent needs after hours.
  • Notifies appropriate entities if facility on diversion for any reason
  • Identifies need for and initiates Incident Command for disaster situations
  • Coordinates resources and equipment utilized by multiple departments, including interpretation services equipment, computer, vein finder, and in house sleep rooms.
  • Assures that BCH policies and procedures are followed. Acts as a role model/mentor and provides staff education as appropriate.
  • Maintains clinical competencies for all clinical areas. Applies the nursing process and performs clinical skills for the direct delivery of quality patient care.
  • Participates in process improvement activities to promote quality patient care.
  • Communicates to department managers about unusual patient or staff occurrences, changes in staffing requirements, commendable performance and/or disciplinary issues with staff. Contacts administration for risk management issues, physicians issues, and/or legal issues.
  • Practices excellent service recovery. Resolves with tact and diplomacy.
  • Actively promotes excellence in customer service by creating a positive work environment by demonstrating a cooperative team approach and attitude.
  • Builds trusting, collaborative relationships with staff, physicians, and ancillary staff. Acknowledges the efforts of the staff, provides positive reinforcement.
  • Participates in charts audits as designated.
  • Provides input into equipment purchases, product demonstrations
  • Reviewing, revising, and/or developing policies and procedures
  • Evaluation and performance of staff
  • Computer competency; training and superuser

Working Conditions

The work environment involves an inherent potential for contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibrations. Noise level fluctuates in the work environment. Hours may vary depending on departmental staffing needs.
