Position Summary  

The Software Development program at Bellevue College seeks candidates for Part-Time Faculty positions across three areas of specialization: Application Development, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Game Development. Our curriculum teaches hands-on practical skills in programming languages including Python, C#, and JavaScript, as well as in developing database-driven web and mobile applications. Our AI courses cover essential concepts in machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. 

We are looking for passionate educators who can bring their industry expertise to our learning environment. The successful candidates will work closely with the Software Development program chair and will report directly to the Division Dean of the School of Business and Technology. This role is crucial in delivering high-quality education and mentorship to our students. 

These Part-Time Faculty positions are temporary, with assignments typically done quarterly. There is no expectation of ongoing employment beyond the current term of assignment. This flexibility is ideal for professionals seeking to contribute to academic excellence while maintaining their industry engagements.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. 

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $5,716.52 - $6,968.62. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter. 

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department  

Located within the School of Business & Technology, the Software Development program at Bellevue College combines theoretical understanding with practical application. Our curriculum is designed to accommodate a diverse group of learners, offering specialized pathways in application development, artificial intelligence (AI), and game development. With courses ranging from beginner to intermediate levels, we ensure a well-rounded educational experience for all students. Students completing their Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree will culminate their studies with a choice between participating in an extensive Capstone project or an internship experience, providing them with valuable hands-on experience in the field

Essential Functions  

Our program seeks part-time faculty proficient in providing practical, hands-on instruction using industry-standard tools. We particularly value candidates who can draw from their own software development industry experience to contribute to curriculum development, aiming to equip students with the skills necessary for successful careers post-graduation. 

Our classes are offered both on campus and online, based on the program's needs, course scheduling, and student enrollment trends. Synchronous classes usually convene once or twice a week. Although courses are available both online and in-person, faculty assignments may span both modalities. Given our diverse student body, including many working adults, most synchronous courses in the Software Development program are scheduled for late afternoon or evening. 

New part-time faculty members will be matched with classes that align with their proven expertise and documented professional background, ensuring a fit between their skills and the course content. Furthermore, faculty will have the opportunity to teach a range of skill levels, spanning from beginner to intermediate in software development. 

Expectations for part-time faculty include being accessible to students outside of class hours, engaging students actively in their learning process, upholding high standards for course content, providing timely and constructive feedback on coursework and exams, and complying with the program's assessment practices and policies. 

Additionally, part-time faculty are encouraged to contribute to governance activities aimed at enhancing student success, participate in assessment efforts, and attend departmental and division meetings as needed. 

  • Directing student learning in assigned courses. Establishing and assessing student learning outcomes.  
  • Advising students.  
  • Meeting accreditation requirements.  
  • Maintaining current knowledge and skills in areas of assignment in one or more subjects including Application Development, Artificial Intelligence, or Game Development.  
  • Engaging in professional development and/or certification activities.  
  • Building collaborative relationships within the Bellevue College community.  
  • Fostering a positive, caring learning environment in which diversity and pluralism are valued.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Software Development, Computer Science, Game Development or a related field. 
  • Advanced skills in at least two of the following areas: AI concepts including ML, NLP, and CV, Python programming, C# programming, game development, and application development.  
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in software development including C#, C++, JavaScript, Python, and SQL. 
  • Able to integrate real-world projects into the curriculum. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to connect and build relationships with students and colleagues from varied ethnicities, ages, backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities. 
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Experience in college level instruction or adult learners. 
  • Awareness of current industry trends in software development, application development, artificial intelligence or game development. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach in traditional, hybrid and fully online environments.  
  • Demonstrated experience working collegially with diverse colleagues in a collaborative and inclusive manner. 
  • Awareness of teaching and learning theory, and an openness to educational innovation.
