Position Summary  

The Senior Director of Marketing & Communications is responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive strategy to market Bellevue College (BC) to its constituencies to increase market share and enhance the College's image and relationships with external and internal audiences. To increase market share, this position is responsible for the development and execution of comprehensive, integrated marketing plans for the College, its academic programs, and the BC Foundation. The Senior Director will provide leadership in strategizing and implementing processes and activities to help meet enrollment targets, advance and manage the image and competitive position of the college, and collaborate on communications activities and processes to create a positive image for Bellevue College.

As part of the Strategic Enrollment Management Committee, the Senior Director will be an integral part of a campus-wide team to achieve enrollment goals, working collaboratively with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Student Affairs, Enrollment and Registrar Services, Welcome Center, the Academic Affairs Division, and will take a leadership role in all enrollment-related marketing initiatives.

The Senior Director of Marketing & Communications works in collaboration with, and under supervision of the Vice President of Institutional Advancement. The team which this position will lead will include all staff in Marketing & Communications, including professionals in Communications, Marketing, Web Services, and Creative Services.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $107,844 - $156,374/year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Typically, new hire starts no higher than $119,976/year based on Bellevue College Exempt salary schedule.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which means that you are not eligible for overtime pay.

About the Department  

The Institutional Advancement (IA) Division of Bellevue College works across the full academic enterprise to solidify a multi-faceted culture of brand awareness, philanthropy, and internal and external engagement. IA supports the College's mission by increasing awareness of, advocacy for, engagement in, and giving to Bellevue College. As part of the IA division, the Marketing & Communications department is responsible for stewarding the BC brand and driving the college's marketing strategy to increase awareness, support enrollment, and drive community engagement.

Essential Functions  

Marketing

  • Design, manage and implement a comprehensive integrated marketing plan in support of recruitment goals. Analyze local and national educational trends and marketing research to develop strategies. 
  • Manage and increase public and community engagement and connection, through integrated marketing campaigns, including digital advertising, email marketing, content strategy, social media, and traditional marketing tactics. 
  • Utilize marketing technology, including Smartsheet, TargetX Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Google Analytics, and Google AdWords to manage and measure marketing effectiveness and adjust strategies in response to this analysis. 
  • Support and facilitate development and implementation of academic or other BC program-specific marketing plans. Consult with internal stakeholders to provide focus, define marketing needs and message creation. 
  • Collaborate with Web Editor-in-Chief, web committee and vendors to improve the student and public experience online and ensure consistency and effectiveness of brand and marketing strategy. 
  • Develop and maintain marketing operations that adhere to BC brand guidelines, established college and state policy, accessibility standards and budget. 
  • Write, edit and produce marketing collateral and other communications. 
  • Present marketing reports to leadership and the campus community.

Team Leadership and Supervision

  • Direct and manage the Marketing and Communications and Web team operations and HR processes including recruiting and selecting, providing training and development, planning and assigning work, evaluating performance, resolving grievances, and taking corrective action.
  • Supervise the Marketing & Communications, Web team, and Creative Services staff. 
  • Conduct regular 1:1 and team meetings with employees.  
  • Approve employee leave requests and time sheets
  • Direct the Marketing and Communications and Web team budgets and manage vendor and third-party relationships and contracts.

External Communications / Community Engagement

  • Collaborate with Marketing & Communications team and managers to oversee, plan, implement, and support BC communications, creative services, media relations, and social media presence and impact.
  • Manage BC's brand, and messaging through college print, website planning and collaboration, and electronic publications.
  • Collaborate with Division Operations management to manage BC¿s brand identity, promotional merchandise planning and operational oversight planning and execution.

Internal Communications

  • Collaborate with and support the Associate Director of Communications to develop and oversee a comprehensive internal communications strategy, that keeps faculty, staff, and administrators informed, engaged, and aligned with institutional priorities. 
  • Manage internal communication channels including employee newsletters, intranet content, all-staff announcements, and leadership messaging.
  • Partner with Human Resources, the President¿s Office, and division leaders to ensure timely, transparent, and consistent communication during organizational change, policy updates, and major institutional initiatives.
  • Cultivate a strong internal culture of communication by establishing clear protocols, feedback mechanisms, and two-way dialogue across the institution.
  • Collaborate with and support the Associate Director of Communications in planning and providing leadership in the collection, processing, dissemination, and creation of communications required to address a crisis situation. Acts as a backup in crisis communication management and execution, when the Associate Director of Communications is absent or unavailable.
  • Collaborate and support the Marketing Manager in Community Education strategy and program development and execution.

Foundation & Advancement Communications

  • Collaborate with the College Foundation to develop and execute marketing and communications strategies that support fundraising campaigns, donor stewardship, scholarship awareness, and foundation events.
  • Create compelling impact stories, case statements, and donor-facing content that highlight the Foundation¿s mission and the transformative effect of philanthropy on students and the community.
  • Ensure Foundation communications are aligned with the College¿s overall brand standards and messaging framework.

Other

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Bachelor¿s degree in marketing, public relations, communications, journalism or related field. Any combination of relevant education and/or experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Progressively responsible professional experience in marketing, including digital marketing, traditional marketing, advertising, community and public relations or related field.
  • Demonstrated competency in several of the following areas: digital and traditional marketing, publications, advertising, branding, social and digital media and web communications. 
  • Demonstrated experience effectively developing and implementing complex marketing strategies and multi-channel campaigns.
  • Demonstrated experience in making administrative decisions; providing effective advice and counsel on institutional marketing and exercising effective judgment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering oral presentations and written materials for a variety of audiences and purposes. 
  • Ability to direct market and public opinion research and evaluate strategic communications programs and activities applicable to a large organization. 
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel, Google Analytics and Google AdWords.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams and effective supervisory skills with direct reports.
  • Knowledge of marketing and communications best practices.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Master¿s degree in Communications, Marketing Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Media Studies, or similar fields.
  • Demonstrated experience working in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Knowledge of marketing best practices in higher education related to admissions, student affairs, academic affairs, and financial aid for both traditional and adult student populations.
  • Knowledge of emerging communications and marketing issues applicable to educational institutions.
  • Experience managing personnel and responsibilities related to higher education functions.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, TargetX or other CRM software, Smartsheet, or other project management tools and software are required.
