WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING

We care deeply about transforming lives with AMD technology to enrich our industry, our communities, and the world. Our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences – the building blocks for the data center, artificial intelligence, PCs, gaming and embedded. Underpinning our mission is the AMD culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world's most important challenges. We strive for execution excellence while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives.

AMD together we advance_

THE ROLE:

As the Technical Leader, Power Systems Design Engineering in the Datacenter and GPU Accelerated Processing Division, you will be responsible for the board power system design and development for AMD products in this expanding and strategic market for AMD. You will interact with other key engineering teams such as silicon design, packaging, board design, signal integrity, thermal/mechanical, platform validation, and manufacturing and leaders within AMD, customers, suppliers, and partners.

In the Advanced System and Power team, we design high-technology platforms for world-class products based on AMD's Graphics Processing Units (GPU's). Our team plays a major part in architecting and shaping every graphics board offered by AMD.

We design cutting-edge power converters for our discrete graphics boards that retail around the world. Facing always more stringent demands in terms of the current level, efficiency, and responsiveness, these designs are essential to maximize the performance from our GPU's in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Lead Board Design/Electrical Engineering will be responsible for developing and leading a team of 5-10 engineers in a highly focused global engineering team based in Austin, Texas. The successful candidate will have a board engineering and power systems development background and work as part of a global team in delivering commercially viable products (silicon to systems) to the marketplace in a timely and cost-effective manner.

This engineer will lead his team to work with other cross-functional teams to design and implement a full power delivery network, model and validate PDN impedance and droop targets, and verify power supply integrity using lab and in-situ silicon measurements.  The candidate is expected to work and guide the system's design team to provide optimum component selection and detailed layout guidelines during the design execution phase.  In addition, the candidate is expected to work with the Board Validation team to develop test plans/procedures to perform system-level validation for characterizing design margins on the power domains.  Other responsibilities include:

  1. Work with SoC and System Architects and external industry to drive the latest power delivery technologies and innovations for computers and electronics industry
  2. Analyze and compare solutions, and then drive team insights and architecture forward into system implementation, SoC silicon, and power delivery silicon.
  3. Conduct feasibility studies and work with development teams to deliver solutions.

This engineer will manage work assignments and coordinate results cross-functionally, and globally, responsible for building and motivating a high-performance team as well as developing key relationships with OEM/ODM customers.  In addition, at a technical level the person will be able to direct technical work within the team as well as mentor and develop employees within the team.   The position includes focusing on the technology development and productization of new product architectures and features, packaging technologies, and power regulation solutions at a board and system level for AMD's products.  This role requires considerable use of initiative and independent judgment.  This role will also be a key person representing the team and its activities in program and platform core teams.

The selected candidate will have the ability to ‘influence' and effectively communicate their vision throughout the organization. They will be a driver of continuous improvement and new ways of thinking by promoting new ideas/perspectives around power design, architectures, and product definition.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven technical understanding of power supply architectures and PDN in server, OAM, and PCIe environments
  • Understanding and experience with multi-phase buck/buck-boost regulators, digital PWM controllers, bus converters, LDOs, PMICs, charge pumps, ADCs & DACs, etc
  • Working knowledge of 2D/2.5D EM simulation tools such as Sigrity's PowerDC, PowerSI, SiWave or equivalent
  • Strong knowledge of high frequency magnetics design for power electronics
  • Printed circuit board design experience is a must
  • Expertise in schematic capture, PCB design tools such as OrCAD or Allegro
  • Ability to work with multiple cross functional teams to make the right trade-offs on system level performance
  • Excellent knowledge of control theory, closed loop compensation, stability analysis, phase margin, etc.
  • Proficiency with lab equipment such as oscilloscope, eload, function generator, etc.
  • Experience with analog circuit modeling and simulation tools (e.g. Simplis, PSpice, HSpice etc.) required
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of AMD's SVIx power management interface

The Lead Engineer of Power Systems Design Engineering must have demonstrated the ability to be a constant force for innovation and improvement throughout their career. The successful candidate must have experience leading senior-level engineers and will play a pivotal role in empowering and strengthening the core values of this team. Our selected candidate will use his/her proven leadership and architecture skills to ensure the engineering team continuously innovates, uses ‘best practices' and adds value for its customers.
