Software Engineer - CPU Performance Modeling
THE ROLE:
As a Core Performance Modelling Engineer, you will join AMD's Core Performance team to help model, analyze, and debug the performance of next-generation CPU cores. This is an early-career opportunity to learn performance simulators, correlation regressions across simulation, emulation, and RTL, and internal analysis tooling, while working closely with experienced engineers who will mentor you as you grow. You will gradually take on increasing ownership of debugging performance discrepancies and contributing to the team's tooling, with support and guidance every step of the way. There is also room to be exposed to machine learning and AI-driven techniques applied to performance datasets, collaborating with teammates already building automated analysis and triage tooling.
THE PERSON:
You are a curious, motivated programmer who enjoys solving problems and is excited to learn how modern processors work internally. You have a strong foundation in programming and computer science fundamentals from your studies or early experience, and you're eager to grow into debugging issues that span software, simulation, and hardware behavior. You communicate clearly, ask good questions, and take initiative to learn — while also being comfortable asking for help and guidance from senior teammates. You're looking for a role where you can build real engineering skills in computer architecture and performance analysis, with growing independence over time.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Learn and contribute to software and scripts supporting CPU core performance modelling and correlation regressions across simulation, emulation, and RTL environments, with mentorship from senior team members.
- Assist in investigating discrepancies in performance metrics (e.g., IPC, PMC data, latency) between simulation, emulation, and RTL results, under the guidance of more senior engineers.
- Build foundational knowledge of processor pipeline and memory hierarchy behavior to help identify sources of performance and correlation issues.
- Contribute to internal performance analysis dashboards and tooling, including data pipelines and data processing/validation scripts.
- Gain exposure to applying machine learning and AI techniques to performance datasets, supporting automated analysis and triage tooling alongside more experienced colleagues.
- Write clean, well-documented code, with growing independence over time, and practice clearly communicating technical findings to the team.
- Participate in regular team syncs and cross-team coordination with design, verification, and emulation teams.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Solid programming fundamentals and problem-solving skills from coursework, personal projects, or internships.
- Familiarity with C++ and at least one scripting language (Python preferred).
- Foundational coursework or project exposure to computer architecture concepts, such as processor pipelines and memory hierarchies.
- Some experience with Unix/Linux environments and version control tools (e.g., Git) is a plus.
- Familiarity with hardware verification concepts (e.g., simulation, debug) is a plus, but not required.
- Academic, project-level, or internship exposure to logic design or Hardware Description Languages (Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL) is a plus.
- Curiosity about machine learning/AI techniques and their application to engineering data is a plus.
- Knowledge of assembly language is a plus but not required.
- Willingness to debug across multiple layers of a system with support from the team.
- Good written and spoken English, with the ability to learn to communicate technical concepts clearly.
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree (or final year of study) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- No prior industry experience required; relevant internships, academic projects, or coursework are a strong plus.
