THE ROLE:
AMD is seeking a Principal Mechanical/Thermal Architect to join our Advanced System Architecture team. In this pivotal role, you will collaborate with GPU, CPU, network, and system architects and engineers to design and evaluate next-generation AI systems. Your expertise will help shape mechanical solutions for servers, racks, and data centers, including packaging, power, and thermal strategies for cutting-edge AI infrastructure. You will play a key role in defining optimized system architectures to meet evolving platform and datacenter needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Generate and develop innovative concepts to address future infrastructure challenges, with a focus on industry trends and pathfinding.
  • Support concepts through thorough analysis, including FEA, CFD, and statistical methods.
  • Model, document, and communicate ideas using MCAD tools such as Creo or SolidWorks.
  • Monitor and evaluate emerging technologies and competitive AI systems, performing in-depth competitive analysis.
  • Collaborate with the Advanced System Architecture team to develop and assess AI architecture concepts for the next decade, optimizing for performance, cost, and functionality while considering risk, development cost, and schedule.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Extensive experience in mechanical engineering, specifically in server and rack system design at scale and high performance. Experience with HPC or AI infrastructure is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of power delivery, thermal solutions, and data center environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas to engineers, customers, and executives.
  • Proven track record of multidisciplinary collaboration, leading or influencing design teams, peers, and managers.
  • Experience in both internal and customer/partner architectural exploration and collaboration, with a strong industry network.
  • Positive, open collaborator able to work effectively in cross-site and matrixed environments.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering
