Assists in the development of research proposals, implementation of research designs (e.g., data collection, data entry/summary, etc) and the preparation of reports.

  • Conceptualizes research protocols, evaluation designs and drafts possible approaches for conducting research and evaluation investigations as requested by senior staff.

  • Prepares protocols and primary data collection instruments for studies for the management, cost and outcomes of home and community-based studies, as directed.

  • Drafts specifications for constructions of variables or other methods of summarizing study data. 

  • Performs descriptive analyses (quantitative or qualitative) of study data (e.g., tabulates data on characteristics of study participants, utilization of home care services, patient status at the end of follow-up period).

  • Conducts literature searches (including computerized searches), retrieves articles, reviews for appropriateness of content and extracts relevant data and drafts literature review summary for use by senior research staff.

  • Oversees new or less experienced staff, including Research Interviewers, Research Assistants and Research Analysts (Level I).  Coordinates activities of Research Interviewers and participates in direct data gathering activities using patient interviews and other methods for abstracting data from records, as directed.

  • Coordinates meetings, panels and conferences, as requested, (e.g., locates suitable space, contacts speakers/participants, prepares materials for distribution, helps participants solve logistical problems, and writes summaries of presentations/discussions). 

  • Participates in the preparation and submission of research proposals in response to Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and to investigator initiated grants and contract opportunities by obtaining copies of funding announcements and specific requirements; helping to develop a timeline for proposal production; identifying, reviewing and summarizing relevant material; gathering CVs and other information on key staff to be included in the proposal; and drafting sections of proposals under the direction of senior staff. 

  • Drafts reports summarizing research, applicable trends and policies.  Develops tables, charts, and graphs for inclusion in reports.

  • Prepares budgets and financial reports for current and pending grants and projects (e.g., develops spreadsheets for estimating/tracking expenditures on project personnel, supplies, expert panels, project consultants, etc., and summarizes expected/actual expenditures) under the direction of project managers.

  • Assists researcher in the development of primary data collection instruments (e.g., interview protocols, patient questionnaires) by reviewing instruments used in related studies, identifying standardized and validated questions, organizing questions into logical groups, etc.

  • Enters or summarizes data in a computer database and manages all administrative aspects of data automation, storage and retrieval.

  • Performs general office duties (i.e., filing, photocopying, taking minutes of meetings, coordinating conference/meeting logistics).

  • Performs other duties and participates in special projects as assigned.



  Bachelor's Degree in health care, quantitative, social services, social sciences, computer science, informatics, or related discipline required.  Master's degree in related discipline with completed coursework in research preferred.


  Minimum three years experience in a health, policy or research related setting (an equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered) required.  Experience conducting in-person and telephone interviews, and or focus groups required.  Experience with data management (eg. data entry, retrieval, summary) required.  Personal computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, chart, graph and database preparation (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).  Excellent oral and written communication skills required.  Ability to perform statistical analyses (e.g., t-tests, ANOVA) using software programs such as SAS and SPSS preferred.
