 Sterile Processing Tech- PRN Req 1911636  


Your Role: Provides a continuous flow of sterile/reusable supplies, equipment and surgical instrumentation which require centralized collection, disinfection, inspection, assembly, preparation, sterilization and monitoring to hospital areas with minimal guidance. Provides these services through knowledge and implementation of regulatory guidelines and designated policies and procedures.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains work environment in a safe, clean, orderly manner.
  • Receives, cleans and decontaminates supplies and equipment with departmental policies.
  • Performs, documents and monitors all quality control tools.
  • Receives and inventories departmental supplies, instrumentation and equipment.
  • Prepares instrumentation and equipment according to recommended procedures and techniques in preparation for sterilization.
  • Operates all departmental equipment safely and effectively.
  • Scans instrumentation and assembles, according to prescribed procedures and techniques.

  Department Summary

The Perioperative Services Department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center performs more than 48,000 surgeries in 60 operating rooms. We have 3 Ambulatory Surgery Sites and 3 in house surgical suites. As a level 1 trauma center, some of the most complex and challenging surgeries in the nation are performed here.

 

Our Sterile processing department is comprised of two locations that work together to ensure high quality instruments needs are met for patients and surgeons. With the use of our instrument tracking system, we excel in the preparation of reusable instrumentation and equipment for clinical and surgical procedures across the entire campus. Services include but not limited to Robotic, Endoscopic, Laparoscopic, Cardiac, Trauma, Neuro, Spine, Orthopedic, Ear Nose and Throat, Plastics, Ophthalmology, Vascular, Donor, and transplant services. Our commitment is “Every Patient, Every Time”.

  Position Qualifications: Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2 years of Sterile Processing Experience
  • CRCST or CBSPD Certification
  • Must be able to work at VCCOC or main hospital depending on needs
  Position Shift:   ·       PRN

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent experience) and 2 years relevant experience

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration (LCR):

  • Central Sterile Processing (IAHCSMM CRCST of CBSPD) Within 2 years


Physical Requirements/Strengths needed & Physical Demands:

  • Occasional: Lifting under 35 lbs: Raising and lowering objects under 35 lbs from one level to another

  • Occasional: Bending/Stooping: Trunk bending downward and forward by bending spine at waist requiring full use of lower extremities and back muscles
  • Occasional: Reaching below shoulders: Extending arms in any direction below shoulders.
  • Occasional: Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with hand or hands.


Sensory

  • Occasional: Vision: Clarity of near vision at 20 inches or less and far vision at 20 feet or more with depth perception, peripheral vision, color vision.
  • Continuous: Communication: Expressing or exchanging written/verbal/electronic information.
  • Continuous: Noise: May include exposure to occupational noise levels which equal or exceed an 8-hr time-weighted average of 85 decibels, requiring enrollment in VUMC's Hearing Conservation Program which includes training, use of hearing protection, and periodic audiometry.


Environmental Conditions

  • Occasional: Chemicals and Gasses: Medications, cleaning chemicals, oxygen, other medical gases used in work area.
  • Occasional: Pathogens: Risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other contagious illnesses.
  • Occasional: Radiation: May be exposed to occupational radiation, requiring enrollment in VUMC's Radiation Safety Program which includes training, use of personal protective equipment with lead shielding, and personal dose monitoring.
  • Occasional: Climate: Ability to withstand exposure to atmospheric extremes including heat, cold, humidity, and barometric pressure changes.
