THIS IS A GRANT FUNDED POSITION

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position performs a broad range of biological tests and procedures using standard scientific techniques and methods; and recording, analyzing, and reporting results for in vitro and in vivo studies testing antivirals against the New World Alphaviruses at BSL3 and ABSL3.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides support of efficacy experiments conducted in mice with viruses, collection of tissues and endpoint analyses, virus isolation and isolation and sequencing of viruses.
2. Develops and executes assays to measure and detect viral replication in cell lines and animal tissues and/or fluids.
3. Designs, optimizes and/or validates all assays using appropriate instrumentation.
4. Utilizes MS Office Suite Products and statistical analysis tools to analyze and present data.
5. Measures the response of viruses or viral proteins to antiviral drugs. Explores the response of other pathogens of interest to antiviral drugs. Supports all aspects of in vitro or animal studies of pathogens for life history drug studies.
6. Builds and/or obtains the reagents and technical approaches required for the work.
7. Publishes and presents data in papers and at internal/external meetings.
8. Develops protocols and/or Standard Operating Procedures for all techniques utilized if required.
9. Manages equipment service inspections and equipment validation process. Maintains inventory of supplies and reagents needed to perform scientific experiments.
10. Performs general laboratory housekeeping tasks.
11. Monitors budget for supplies.
12. Completes data analysis, including statistical analysis and prepare reports.
13. Performs other duties as otherwise assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in one of the sciences. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of laboratory and research experience; OR Master's Degree in Molecular Virology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or related discipline will be accepted in lieu of experience.  Experience or willingness to perform mice experiments routinely. Prior experience with molecular, cellular, and/or biochemical techniques.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of Molecular Virology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or related discipline. Ability to work in a BSL2 or BSL3 environment.
• Ability to follow protocols and aide in protocol development for standard operating protocols.
• Ability to conduct effective literature searches, analyze and present data.
• Demonstrated ability to utilize MS Office Suite Products, Sigma Plot, or other statistical software products.
• Ability to observe and follow appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding, and performing Standard Operating Procedures, Good Laboratory Practices requirements and study protocols.
• Ability to technically analyze tissues using virological, immunological, biochemical, and/or pathology samples.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must be able to pass Department of Justice Security Risk Assessment for work with Select Agents and Toxins.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally work evenings and weekends.
