Position Summary: The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing job skills to effectively carry out the nursing process: including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation and time management. S/he is responsible for quality communication, teamwork and leadership/professionalism. Also, directs, coordinates and implements patient teaching, quality/ safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. The Critical Care Nurse will be responsible for providing direct patient care to all caveats related to the cardiothoracic arena including and not limited the care of the cardiothoracic pre-operative and post-operative patient population. The Critical Care Open Heart Nurse must demonstrate the knowledge base and possess critical thinking skills to provide relevant and safe patient care via implementation of the nursing process. In addition, the nurse will assume responsibility and obtain proper training provided by the institution for functionality of medical devices & equipment that are specific to the care of the cardiothoracic surgical patient. Within the nurse's role and scope of practice, he/she must consistently demonstrate the ability to assess and interpret patient data and identify the patient's requirements relative to his/her recovery process. The Cardiothoracic Critical Care nurse will assume professional responsibility and accountability for delivery of patient care as well as continued growth and development on a professional level over the span of his/her critical care nursing career. A Nurse Clinician I is required to complete yearly mandatory competencies as well as any unit specific competencies that are identified by the Nurse Manager as it relates to the patient population of this unit.



Associates degree or Diploma Program in Nursing required. Bachelors degree in Nursing preferred



Registered Nurse license required for Maryland BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification, but will provide training if necessary ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Certification; must have ACLS within one year of start on the unit, but will provide training if necessary 


Skills: Nursing process, team leading, beginning management functions, and certification as required for the position.

Physical Demands/Work Environment: Will be reviewed during the interview process.
