Position Summary: The Behavioral Health Technician, under the direction of a Nurse Manger, Charge Nurse, and/or Staff Nurse, is responsible for providing direct patient care as defined in the Department of Nursing philosophy and objectives. The Behavioral Health Technician will assist in caring for psychiatric inpatients. Assist and observe patients, provide general care and treatments, interacts with the patient and family. Provides one-on-one observation of selected patients for the purpose of identifying behaviors that are potentially hazardous to self or others. Participates in patient-focused activities and therapeutic communication to alleviate high stress situations.
Education: High School graduate or equivalent required. Completion of a certified Nursing Assistant program.
Licensure/Certification: Certified Nursing Assistant required. BLS-Basic Life Support Certification required, but training will be provided if necessary.
Experience: Six months successful experinece as a Nursing Assistant in a general hospital preferred. Experience as a student nurse is an acceptable substitute for a Nursing Assistant Class. The student must have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Nursing Care and obtained a Nursing Assistant Certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing. Certain certifications require additional experience for recertification. Previous experience working with behavioral health patients is preferred.
Skills: Aggression management, patient hygiene, physical comfort, mobility, monitoring safety, feeding patients, obtaining specimens, obtaining accu-checks, blood pressures, vital signs, height, weight and other delegated tasks as allowed by the Maryland Nurse Practice Act.
