Department Description

This is UCSF's first regional Oncology site, located in the heart of the Peninsula.

The environment provides a unique opportunity for healthcare workers with an interest in joining a dynamic multi-specialty clinic and infusion team.


Job Summary

This position is located in San Mateo, CA.

The Outpatient Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) serves in a leadership role and delivers direct patient care to an Adult Oncology population at a multi-specialty regional UCSF Cancer Center site in San Mateo, guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services.

This nurse is experienced and highly skilled with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the cancer disease process, the major treatment modalities, symptom management, supportive care, and patient education.

At this operational level, the nurse proactively embraces the Oncology Nursing Society/Standards of Oncology Nursing practice to utilize the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care.

The nurse utilizes an interdisciplinary approach across the continuum of care with adherence to National Patient Safety Goals set forth by regulatory requirements. The RN is recognized and utilized as a clinical resource and demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the unit and the organization.


Required Qualifications
  • Two (2) or more years of recent RN adult clinical Oncology Nursing experience
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Current Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certification within six months of hire date
  • Experience administering chemotherapy/biotherapy
  • Knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to this position
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) or more years of Adult Oncology nursing experience
  • OCN Certification or other relevant specialty certification
  • Membership in professional organizations is recommended
  • Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certification

Licensure/Certification
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Current Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certification within six months of hire date

Work Environment

  • Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.
  • Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility.
  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.
  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.
  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.
