How will you make an impact?

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative technical manager to lead a team of scientists focused on applying metabolomic and proteomic datasets to facilitate cell culture media and process development. The technical team will develop mass spectrometry-based methods for data acquisition and interpretation under the supervision of the Manager, Multi-omics Group Lead. The individual will work with the team to design experimental plans, lead study execution, analyze experimental data, generate laboratory protocols, and write technical reports. The manager will work with department leadership to implement strategic and tactical plans across the entire team.

What will you do?

  • Responsible for initiating, directing and executing scientific research and/or development strategies through the R&D staff
  • Act as the technical expert and company spokesperson on new product development teams and scientific projects
  • Works with department leadership and business team to assess new technology and prioritize resources for development
  • Directs and controls the activities of multiple projects and personnel. Assists direct reports with setting and execution of goals & objectives and career development plans
  • Performs duties independently with only general direction given on new projects. Job encounters diverse work situations involving a high degree of complexity
  • Works on complex problems of diverse scope where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of multiple factors within aggressive timelines
  • Troubleshoots and solves difficult problems in the design/execution of development projects
  • Exercises practical judgment within broadly defined practices and policies and exhibits creativity and foresight in selecting approaches and techniques for obtaining solutions
  • Investigates, creates, and incorporates new methods and technologies to improve effectiveness of development workflows
  • Applies expertise and knowledge of industry trends to identify new opportunities for novel product offerings that address customer pain points in support of long-term business goals
  • Performs fundamental literature and patent searches related to new technology and product opportunities
  • Recognizes opportunities for in-licensing and internal IP development. Prepares patent disclosures and supports the Legal Department in patent preparation
  • Balance resources in accordance with department and business leadership priorities
  • Maintains high level of professional expertise and substantial knowledge of principles and theories through familiarity with competing technologies and/or products, review of current scientific literature, and attendance at scientific seminars and meetings
  • Solid record of publication and presentation at national and international conferences and prepares technical reports, product summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses
  • Works with senior leadership to implement a technical strategy for the business segment and interacts closely with other internal departments (i.e., Marketing, Business Development, Quality, Operations and/or Technical Services) and with key thought leaders within the industry in the development and commercialization of new products
  • Complies with all company safety, training, and quality regulations (e.g., ISO compliance, GLP/GMP requirements, etc.) and procedures

How will you get here?

Education / Experience
  • Ph.D. degree in Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or similar discipline AND two (2) years of related experience; OR a master's degree in Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or similar discipline AND five (5) years of related experience; OR bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or similar discipline AND seven (7) years of related experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Proven experience in the analysis and interpretation of metabolomic and proteomic datasets
  • Knowledge of mass spectrometry-based methods and applications
  • Experience in the identification of new technologies and establishment of new IP
  • Proven proficiency in data analysis, research design, troubleshooting, and the evaluation of new technologies and procedures for manufacturing reagents, systems, or products
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and solve problems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear, concise, and accurate manner
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize, and adapt to changing project priorities
  • Previous experience leading technical teams
  • A proven track record of success working individually as well as in cross-functional team-based environments
  • Familiarity with project management techniques including tracking of project progress, resources and issues

Physical Requirements
  • This role may require work in the laboratory environment and to be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • This role may require person to stand for long periods of time while performing duties and ability to work safely with chemicals and hazardous materials
  • This role requires the ability to work flexible hours
  • Travel requirements for this role is between 5 – 25%

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous people leadership experience in an industrial setting
  • Expertise in the operation and maintenance of mass spectrometry instruments (such as the Thermo Fisher Scientific Orbitrap instruments)
  • Previous experience and proven proficiency in media development for mammalian cell culture
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of small-scale mammalian cell culture, and operation of bench-top stirred tank bioreactors and related process development laboratory equipment
  • Working knowledge of scientific principles associated with bioprocessing workflows
  • Understanding of chemical, biochemical and physical interactions of cell culture media and reagent components
  • Prior Industrial experience in continuous bioprocess development for human biotherapeutic applications (perfusion/chemostat-based culture methods)
