JOB FACILITY: 

Central Star Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF) is a 16-bed facility that provides acute inpatient psychiatric services to adolescent clients ages 12 -17.

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Youth Counselor is the treatment team member who is responsible for providing direct care to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of the adolescents.  This care is provided through direct and
indirect physical and verbal interactions with clients, modeling appropriate behaviors for clients, and monitoring daily client activities. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Experience

 

Youth Counselor I:  

High School Diploma or equivalent.

One (1) year experience with seriously emotionally disturbed adolescents preferred.
  

Youth Counselor II:

AA degree, in a related mental health field, preferred.

One (1) year experience with seriously emotionally disturbed adolescents preferred.

 

License or Certification

Valid California Driver's License, preferred.

 

Specialized Skills
Ability to interact and communicate both verbally and in writing with seriously emotionally disturbed adolescents, other staff and the public.

 

Physical Requirements

Ability to physically perform containment, escort, and restraint procedures with assaultive adolescents.

Ability to physically assist in lifting and carrying assaultive adolescents weighing up to 200 lbs.

Ability to visually and audibly assess adolescent's behavior and needs.

Ability to walk, run and play active games with the adolescents.

 

POTENTIAL JOB HAZARDS:

Demonstrated use of ProAct Training

Demonstrated use of Standard Precautions

Demonstrated use of CPR

  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Supervise, protect, and care for adolescent clients individually and in groups.

  2. Promote and assist adolescents with self-help skills in the areas of eating, hygiene and grooming, positive behaviors, social interactions with peers, and planned group activities.

  3. Assist adolescents in both large and small activity groups, encouraging appropriate behavior and providing feedback to adolescents.

  4. Act as role model for adolescents, modeling appropriate behaviors and responses to issues and events.

  5. Perform documentation that records adolescents' daily activities and behaviors.

  6. Attend and participate in shift rounds, change of shift meetings, and treatment team meetings as scheduled.

    Participate in ProAct Team assignments and activities.
