The Associate General Counsel, working independently and collaboratively with Office of General Counsel colleagues, will be responsible for a broad range of substantive areas. Working directly with all departments of the University administration, faculty, postdocs, and students, as well as outside counsel, vendors, and service suppliers, the Associate General Counsel will manage outside counsel, advise, and actively participate in litigation matters, provide high-quality legal advice on a wide range of issues, research and draft memoranda, opinions, and correspondence on a range of legal matters, collaborate with colleagues and advise on various initiatives, handle and advise on transactional, corporate, and contract work, and support effective and efficient use, coordination, and oversight of outside counsel.
Strong academic and professional credentials, J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school, license to practice as an attorney in New York (or within one year of hiring), and a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a law firm, University, non-profit or for-profit institution, or governmental entity after completion of legal education. Excellent candidates with fewer years of experience may be considered for a job title commensurate with their years of experience. Must have extensive litigation experience, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex agreements, analyzing complex legal and factual issues, performing substantive legal research, and regularly interacting with and advising clients. Excellent interpersonal skills that foster successful interaction and collaboration with a diverse array of legal colleagues, clients, and leaders at all levels and practical, analytical, problem-solving approach to providing legal services necessary. Must be self-motivated and have a demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently handle and organize multiple tasks and initiatives in a broad range of substantive areas, prioritizing and working independently in a highly collegial and high-performing environment. Impeccable oral and written communication skills, negotiation skills, and an ability to learn new areas quickly and identify and address complicated and sensitive problems across a broad range of substantive areas with creativity and professional discretion, and judgment. Must have a keen attention to accuracy and detail, significant experience with keeping confidences, commitment to high ethical and professional standards, and a high degree of personal integrity and sound judgment.
