Overview and Essential Functions
The role of a Horizontal Directional Drill Operator includes operating horizontal directional drill rigs, locating equipment and product support equipment. Perform semi-skilled activities related to HDD locating must be familiar with industry standards, policies, guidelines, and procedures. Job duties may include but are not limited to: operating all relevant machinery, locating equipment, utility locating equipment or hand tools as required by the work performed. The project is local to Des Moines, Iowa.
What you will do:
- You will operate a Horizontal Directional Drill for installation of underground telecommunications cable conduit, including fiber optic cable
- You will ensure safety of the public and other utilities underground facilities
- You will perform all duties according to prescribed safety procedures and uses appropriate safety equipment
- You will setup and cleanup of work site including traffic and pedestrian control
- You will read utility locates and coordinating day lighting of these facilities
- You will ensure all applicable permits and locates are complete and on site
- You will inspect the work that is in progress to ensure that the workmanship conforms to specifications
- You will operate construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications
- You will level earth to final grade specifications
- You will operate vehicles and equipment operations from trucks to other equipment as directed and certified
- You will perform proper maintenance by greasing, oiling, and making minor repairs on equipment
- You will lead teams in the field effectively and efficiently as needed and directed by supervisor
Qualifications
Who we are looking for:
- You must have 1-2 years prior experience (Required) in underground fiber and coax construction
- You have experience with Vermeer and Ditch Witch Directional drilling equipment
- You have knowledge of utility depths and placements, and operating utility locating equipment
- You are capable of reading and understanding blueprints
- You have a Valid Driver's License (Required)
- You have a Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement (Preferred)
- You must have reliable transportation, be dependable and punctual
- You must be available to work overtime, on weekends and holidays, and the possibility of being called in during off hours
- You must be able to work outside in the varying elements year round
- You must be authorized to work in the United States
- You must exhibit great verbal and written communication skills
- You must have the ability to obtain DOT Health Card
Physical Demands:
- You must be able to meet physical demands of activity involved with the job
- You must be able to work in all weather conditions
- You must be able to lift up to 80 pounds unassisted
