Assists the Activities Director with planning, organizing, directing and leading of activities and programs to meet the needs, level and interest of our assisted living residents. As a member of the Otterbein Marblehead Team, it is expected that the Activity Assistant be committed to advancing health and wellness to the individuals we serve.


The Activity Assistant must demonstrate competency in areas of Core Performance, Work Relations and Teamwork, Personal Responsibility and Mission Support, and Guest, Resident and Internal Customer Focus. Competency is demonstrated when the work performed results in the outcomes described under each area.

Core Performance

Demonstrates a knowledge of appropriate crafts, games, exercises and therapies for all resident levels.

Encourages intellectual/educational development through literature, lectures, music, movies and cultural events.

Assists in seasonal decorating of assisted living public areas.

Recognizes all resident's birthdays and anniversaries in a friendly and professional manner.

Assists in purchasing materials, craft items, and equipment in a cost efficient manner; notifies Wellness Director of needed supplies.

Helps plan and execute activities with residents in a friendly and cheerful manner.

Maintains a record of resident activities and reactions. Report unusual behavior to Nursing or Life Enrichment Director.

Assists with assessments and other record keeping for department.

Supervises the protection of the participants during activities for safety.

Assists with transportation of residents for activities, including bus driving.

Work Relations and Teamwork

Understands the relationship of this job to the facility mission and to other jobs in the facility.

Willingly works with coworkers, supervisors and staff from other departments to solve problems and to improve processes and services.

Participates on facility/department committees and task forces.

Identifies and acts on opportunities to help and support work efforts of coworkers and staff from other departments.

Asks for help and support of own work efforts when appropriate.

Instances of absence and tardiness are within acceptable levels.

Ways to improve work processes, efficiency, and quality are identified and discussed with the supervisor and other appropriate staff members.

Established personnel, department and facility policies are followed.

Attends mandatory educational programs identified by the facility.

Resident, Guest and Internal Customer Focus

Sensitivity to emotional, spiritual and practical needs of resident, families, guests and staff members is demonstrated in all interactions.

Positive feedback and comments about the quality of work and residents, families and coworkers have offered efforts.

Priorities, schedule and effort is adjusted to meet specific customer needs.

Problems related to safety, cleanliness and comfort of resident and work areas are reported and/or corrected.

Universal Precautions and Infection Control techniques are followed.

Understanding own role facility safety plans and procedures related to fire, weather and other disasters is demonstrated.

Small House Related Job Duties

Provides transportation.

Reports equipment malfunctions.


  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

    Licensure/Certification: Valid Drivers License

    Experience: Prefer two years working with older adults.


    1. Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress related to working with persons who are ill, disabled, elderly and/or emotional upset.
    1. Must be able to communicate in English.
    1. Must be detailed oriented and have excellent literacy and writing, documentation, communications and interpersonal abilities.
    1. Must be able to use tools and equipment required.
