This is a skilled working professional and lead technologist position responsible for performing a variety of routine and special laboratory procedures in the clinical laboratory. This person is also responsible for evaluating and reporting results according to laboratory protocol and procedures and federal and state regulations, for use in patient diagnosis and treatment.


1. Supervision and Support: Participates and assists in supervising and coordinating the daily work in the Clinical Laboratory.
a. Assists in developing standard operating procedures for new tests or procedures and implements new tests and systems.
b. Continually evaluates effectiveness of SOP's.
c. Assists in reviewing daily workload and quality control, follows up on any quality or timeliness variances as needed.
d. Functions as a technical resource for staff technologists
e. Ensures all testing and processes adhere to CLIA, CAP, OSHA, FDA, and AABB regulations as indicated for each technical area of supervision.
f. Assists in assuring accurate inventory control is maintained.
g. Facilitates staff attending meetings and other hospital activities.
h. Is able to respond appropriately in emergent situations that may arise in the laboratory environment.
i. Serves as a resource technologist when supervisors of specialized area are not available.
j. Performs special projects, as assigned.
k. Assists supervisor and/or manager with other administrative and technical functions, as directed.

2. Management of Staff: Supports direct reports for evening and night shift.
a. Participates in the interview process and facilitates staff involvement or peer interviews.
b. New employees training.
i. actively participates in the planning, organizing, and completion of laboratory orientation and technical training Specific to responsible shifts
c. Assists supervisors in assuring all competency assessments for designated associates is completed
d. Ensures staff compliance with all hospital mandatory training and education.
e. Assists in preparing timely personnel evaluations Designated associates
f. Applies personnel policies in a consistent, fair and equitable manner.
g. Helps to identify and develop the learning needs of staff.
h. Develops annual personal goals and reviews progress towards goal achievement on a quarterly basis.
i. Assists with development of shift schedules, ensuring a consistent workload distribution that is fair and meet established productivity standards.

3. Technical Skills and Problem Solving: Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
a. Evaluates specimens for suitability for testing and resolves problems related to specimen collection.
b. Performs testing, records results of tests and ensures that results are accurate.
c. Reports results for stats, abnormal results, critical values, and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy.
d. Proficient in instrument operation and advanced troubleshooting for designated section of the laboratory.
e. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) as indicated.
f. Evaluates laboratory results and correlates data to recognize disease states. Monitors test results for reasonableness.
g. Investigates and resolves technical, instrument, and other variances leading to problems with or unexpected test results.
h. Exercises initiative and independent judgment in dealing with a broad scope of procedural and technical problems.
i. Is able to communicate effectively with physicians regarding specific test results.
j. Able to prioritize and organize workload so that results are reported within established turn-around-times.
k. Troubleshoots technical and service problems.

4. Quality Assurance and Maintenance: Assists in overseeing quality assurance and instrument maintenance procedures and maintains related records according to established policies/procedures, which may include the following:
a. Performs, verifies accuracy of results, and records both QC function checks and quality control testing within the specified time frame.
b. Oversees all quality control records.
c. Recognizes instrument malfunction and takes actions to resolve problem. Records corrective action taken.
d. Ensures that daily and scheduled maintenance and function checks on instruments/equipment occur and that documentation of these actions is acceptable.
e. Performs calibration and linearity checks according to established procedures.
f. Oversees all CAP proficiency testing, submits proficiency testing results to CAP, reviews CAP survey analysis, taking any corrective action as indicated.
g. Completes annual departmental competencies within specified time frame.
h. Assists with performance improvement initiatives.
i. Monitors and reviews quality control (Q.C.) and performance improvement (P.I.) data.

5. Development: Maintains current knowledge and certification.
a. Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs.
b. Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department.
c. Depending upon certification agency, year of certification, and mandatory requirement, attends or completes continuing education activities in order to maintain certification.

6. Organizational knowledge
a. Directs and/or maintains awareness of changes in procedures or protocols.
b. Attends department meetings as required.
c. Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the unit.
d. Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate.
e. Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees.

7. Department/Unit Specific Functions and Duties
a. Greets all patients and visitors to the Laboratory in a prompt and professional manner, displaying good customer service skills.
b. Assists with the instruction of medical technology and phlebotomy students in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and application of laboratory test procedures.


• Bachelor's Degree as a Medical Technologist, required.

• ASCP (MT or MLS) Registry or equivalent
• CLS or AMT acceptable

• Two (2) years of experience in a clinical lab is required, preferably including one (1) year of lead/supervisory experience.
