The intensive Advanced Bindery Manufacturing Training program is designed to train candidates with prior experience as machine operators in a manufacturing environment or with mechanical background in another field in the skills necessary to operate commercial bindery machines.

You will learn the basics of the Material Handler and Bindery Assistant positions and then progress to more advanced tasks with the goal of moving on to become a Bindery Operator 1.

Training will include:

  1. Setting up, adjusting and operating a variety of bindery machines containing several types of control surfaces and cutting heads.

  2. Operating various stations of a bindery machine including inkjet and mailing devices, case making and decorating equipment, folders, cutters, collators, stitches, drills, and gluing machines.

  3. Setting up automatic bindery machines containing multiple functions and station capabilities such as power paper cutters, power collators and gatherers, power folders, power speed binders. 

  4. Producing printed sheets into final books, catalogs, manuals, directories, magazines or other completed products.  

  5. Operating automatic adhesive binding machines that contain numerous interrelated process stations that are fed collated sheets or signatures and perform such functions as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering and delivering or stacking completed books, magazines or catalogs.  

  6. Making needed adjustments to coordinate the multiple work stations on a single machine.  

  7. Directing a crew though all aspects of production.  

  8. Monitoring output productivity and quality.

Position Specific Details

  • $0.30 (USD) pay differential for second shift and $0.40 for third.


  1. Two (2) years of prior experience as a machine operator in a manufacturing environment or demonstrated work history with a mechanical background.

  2. Ability to read and follow job specifications to determine what is needed to run a job successfully.

  3. Familiarity with basic mathematics (i.e. decimals, metric units) to understand dimensional requirements contained in job orders and to make more complicated adjustments. 

  4. Ability to use the full range of standard and specialized tools and devices to adjust and maintain the functional accuracy and operating conditions of the bindery machines. 

  5. Skill in making adjustments to powered machines using hand tools (i.e. wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, knives) as well as more specialized hand tools, usually furnished by the machine manufacturer. 

  6. Ability to read and interpret written work which indicates the number and sequence of machine operations required to complete the work and maintain dimensional accuracy in accordance with instructions provided.

  7. Ability to exert up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
